It's getting time to get a new car, and the Volvos are looking rather attractive, specs-wise at least. I'd be thinking of a 5-6 year old V60 or S60, T5 or D5 auto. Anyone have any comments or ownership experiences?

Also tempted but heard stories of expensive parts and servicing.
"Volvo for life" isn't necessarily a choice.

I have a couple of tame mechanics, so servicing is not a problem. I have heard parts prices are high, but I don't know how often they're needed, or how that compares with Merc (which I have).

Depending on your plans, how long would you be looking to hold onto the car? What is the resale value like? Does it hold its price well compared to similar make/models in the car type you are looking at? Just different consideration, maybe.

I love my v40. It's still under maintenance plan, so can't comment on the question of parts etc

Great cars. Then problems start. Not serious problems but expensive electronic problems.

Between my dad and my Volvo, the following went. Average R8k a pop:

A/C Pump x 2
Alternator
Boot Lock x 2
SRS Airbag Sensor
Light Switch
Back Door Lock
Some small weird electronic engine component (can't recall name)
Switch that opens Fuel tank
Wiper water spray pump

Won't ever drive a Volvo out of Motorplan again.

But if I didn't have to fix these things out of my pocket, still one of the nicest cars I've owned.

Which models?

Don't buy a used Volvo over 5 years old. You're asking for problems down the line then.

A less that 6 months old Volvo has snapped a cambelt and Volvo told the obviously unamused owner that it is definitely going to happen again? Why is it going to happen again, does the car has a factory fault or something?

I know someone with a 4 odd year old XC60. Same thing. All these sort of weird electronical problems.

I know people with older ones had a few minor niggles.

Know plenty with newer ones that have none and bought even more of them to fill out the garage.

One of the also owns a Porsche which sits next to the family wagon Volvo which is just bizarre to me but he reckons it beats what Porsche offered.

Didnt know they have D6 here, also why would the cambelt snap? Most cambelt can last 5 years, of min. 3. If I am Volvo, I would not tell my client thou.

Bizarre, I wonder if it is going to snap every 6months? must be one expensive Volvo that one.

Haha, every six months, then their workshop must be able to make some decent money out of all the rebuild...
