Volvo experiences

Hmmm...some scary stories here; I'd be looking at a more recent model though, I should think (2014+). Maybe a Ford Fusion might be an interesting alternative.

Depending on how much you want to spend, the current V40 has a special running that if it was registered from I think June 2018, they come with a 7 year full maintenance plan. But again, I'm not sure your budget.

I think as lots of guys have said here... ANY car that is older than 5 years is a risk. You have no idea how it was driven, which in my own opinion is one of the major factors.

There are certain cars that just have a great reputation for being "bullet proof engines", like the Honda, Toyota, Lexus and the Fords (provided they don't catch fire... sorry too soon...).

But again, if you try do a sample, it's going to be so hard to figure out because it will really depend on how the car was treated.

I've got a close family friend who has a 2008 S40, he said it isn't cheap to service (one or two have cost him R15k). But the car has been a gem otherwise in terms of running - the big ticket service items come along as any car gets older. So in my opinion, any car that old (unless you are using generic parts and generic service provider), is going to cost the same.

I have a V40 that's just got out of service plan (100k) and the service lady told me that my next major service (120) would be approx 15k. It IS a diesel automatic though so that may influence that

What is going to be done that cost this much?

See that's the issue, every service plan basically ends before anything major needs to be done. I've seen the major services on Mercs, BMWs, Audis - and they also R15 - R25k

Major service for my 320d at bmw was R4600. All the filters and new oil, that's all that was needed.

So we need to compare apples with apples, let's see what was replaced in the service for R15k.

Notwithstanding that, that is an incredible price man! Was your service done by BMW?

In my family there have been three old Volvos (V60, and 2 XC90s) and I can't say the running costs were that high given their age (all were kept until the cars were about 18 years old). You must expect that some things will need replacing once a car reaches 10+ years. Can something break before then? Sure, but then you'll be out of pocket for the same amount on any similar car in the same class

No early cambelt failures?

I'm not too stressed about age or mileage, with two mechanics in the family. My current car is a Merc, 15yo and 280000km, still going well. My last was a Mondeo, sold at 14yo and 340000km, and the previous one was a Mondeo, sold at 9yo and 260000km.

I'm looking at a S60 2015 T5 Excel (Drive-E)
85 500km on the clock - planning on driving it for about 3 years...

Yay or nay?
