VOX ADSL Phone Handset Range

Hi,
I'm just wondering what highest distance/range you guys get between your handset to the base is. I think I have a faulty device because even though the device is cordless, I must be within about 3 meters of the base with absolutely CLEAR LINE OF SITE to the base or it disconnects. Am I doing something wrong, or was I given a faulty device?
At work we also have vox, but are using an older speedtouch voip router and the handsets there work throughout the ~20m floorspace of the office, through walls

I use a Vox router and handset, and am able to carry on a conversation anywhere in the house, including upstairs, where the signal has to contend with a 25cm thick roof/floor. I am also able to carry on with the conversation outside the house, to a range of about 90 - 100 metres from the base station.
