Vox Telecom Fatpipe

What should I expect my speedtest results to be on a 10meg line? On my 4meg I was getting about 3.65Mbps and I now on the faster line I'm only getting around 6.8Mbps - not even double the speed of the 4meg line. Checked my brother's 10meg line and he is getting like 9.xxMbps (but it's not ADSL).

ADSL should hover around 8.6Mbps dl and around 1Mbps up.

Not sure what this picture is, but your IP will change if you leave your router off for a while. They say 10mins or so.

It is a picture of the session logs from the vox website and it isn't caused by switching the router on and off. I just wanted to know if this is the new normal now.
It is a pain when watching Netflix.

Anything I can do about mine? Call Telkom?

Yep. Ask them for the Telkom "guest" login details and then use that to do a speed test on http://capetown.spdtst.saix.net/
"Guest" login will only allow you to do speed tests to your local DSLAM.

Ask them to do a Port Reset / Recreate Port and see if it increases in speed.

PM TelkomZA - very helpful guy who has sorted many of my ine issues.

Thanks, I'll probably have to PM because I can only test in the evenings after 7pm (and today is Sunday..)

Or just post your line stats. You might just be too far from the exchange and that is the max your line can handle.

Hmmm, I hope not. One thing I know is I am amongst those with the lowest ping when gaming (well, only really play like one game) and on an SA server. Don't know what that translates to.

Nothing really. Go to your modem page and look at your attenuation and SNR. There is a sticky in the ADSL section explaining all this, and a tool (by Zertop I think) that will tell you what your situation is. Because of my distance to the exchange I can get a max of about 6Mbps, so that could be your situation as well. If your SNR is just above 6 dB then that is likely the case (unless your line is damaged). And your attenuation will probably be in the 40 dB range, which indicated you are far from the exchange.

Maybe I will have to go to an 8Mbps line... :( I didn't know Telkom had these lines up. Hope they will allow me to downgrade if it must come to it. Strange how they are offering 20Mbps lines here then (VDSL I guess).

Who knows, I wouldn't put it past Telkom to accidentally put me on an 8Mbps line, especially since it's kinda new in their lineup.

From Zertop's app:

Zertop's LineTool Results
Date/Time: Sun Dec 06 18:01:07 CAT 2015

Basic Report:

Your packet loss was 0%.
Your average ping was 8ms.
Your maximum ping was 9ms.

Looking at your average ping, your line seems to be running perfectly.
It seems that your maximum ping is also good. If there are any issues, they most probably lie with your ISP

From the first screenshot your line should be capable of at least 10 Mbps. Your attenuation is very low, and the SNR is still ok. The weird thing is that you are syncing at 8 Mbps roughly. It might be worth your while to phone Telkom and try and get through to a senior tech to have a look. Telkom Retail also does not offer the 8 Mbps lines (that Telkom Wholesale has made available), so you will have to move your line to another ISP to get an 8 Mbps line. But you should be able to get 10 Mbps, so good luck.

So, Telkom was useless. Not very helpful at all. He says I am too far from exchange if I'm only getting 8Mbps but he doesn't know where the exchange is. From what I can find, there seems to be some exchange thing 750m away from me..He then asked me what speed i expected... Like what? I want a 10Mbps line. Then he said you'll never get 10Mbps. I told him that I was fully aware but surely i should get more than 6.8Mbps since there is no evidence to prove otherwise. He was reluctant to help beyond anything further.

Should the modem not show my connection speed to be 10240kbps instead of 8128kbps on a 10Mbps line? And if it shows the value it should (I.e. 10240kbps), then it just won't achieve the expected results if it's unable to (distance etc).

See the OP here:

You should easily be able to get 10meg, there seems to be a lot of noise on that line though which is why you're capped at 8. Check your filters and cables in your house, do you hear crackling on the voice line?

No crackling. Very simple setup. Direct from wall to modem and phone.
I got a PM now, and maybe, fingers crossed, it will work. Will check this evening.

Why is my local ping 120? Speeds are fine but this seems like the same congestion on the network that I saw with afrihost when i left them... and afrihost seems to be fine right now.
