how can one keep internet access when doing vpn? (xp.pro<->xp.pro)

the moment you connect - external access is lost , disconnect - its fine!

"gateway forwarding"?

Advanced TCP/IP Properties, disable the 'use default gateway on remote network' for the VPN connection. Your default gateway then remains to the Internet.

To route traffic through the VPN, manually add, or use persistent routes in the routing table. DOS command prompt, 'route help' would get you going.

Although a bit clunky, CMAK allows one to create a customised connection icon that can dynamically add/remove static routes to XP routing table during a VPN connection. Used it a while ago quite successfully (before then advent of Outlook->Exchange via HTTPS)

CMAK is part of Win2003 Admin Tools (for XP) which you can download from here ... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...15-c8f4-47ef-a1e4-a8dcbacff8e3&DisplayLang=en

Actually, it depends. If you're using third party VPN software, like cisco's VPN client, then it is entirely possible that you cannot establish other connections, based upon rules set forth by the VPN link.

If it's Windows VPN, then you should just be able to get around it by defining additional routes.
