Hi folks,

finally getting around to moving my apartment in CT over to fibre from ADSL via Vumatel as they are the only company covering the building at the moment. Are any of the ISP's still covering the Vumatel line installation cost (R1700)?

When I looked around a while ago many of them were, but now as far as I can see very few of my preferred ISPs (CI, Vox, Axxess, Crystal) seem to be. The focus now seems to be on only covering the R999 connection fee. My research may have just been lacking, so thought I would pop on here and see if anyone was in the know about something I haven't spotted.

Any help would be appreciated.

If an ISP covers the install fee they would lock you into some form of commitment, usually 6 months. We don't like the idea of locking a customer in which is why we don't offer it.

Ah thanks, that might very well be why I am not running into anything, as I have been filtering by month to month contracts. Happy to cover the costs of something they have paid for if I changed ISP but not so fond of being locked in long term either :)

No commitment with Afrihost on Vumatel as long as you don't take the free router. If you do take the router, then it's R999 if you cancel in the first 6 months.

Axxess and Afrihost usually have the same terms so would make sure.

Not true. CellC covered the install fee with no commitment

Do they? They paid for my install and 3 month free 20/10 fibre line and that was it
TCs and C's include a claw back, no ISP or business would want to take the risk, as a true month to month.

Yes but if you cancel, you will be liable for the balance.
Nope wasn't. You're stating things here that really didn't happen as fact. It was a promotion they had, took it. After 3 months moved to WebAfrica. End of story

Well a promotion is something different now isnt it cause their current t&C's states a claw back.

Totally sure. Afrihost no longer has the installation clawback for signups after 5 October 2017. Axxess still does though.

10. Connect with Afrihost and Save up to R4000 Offer

10.7 Applicable to signups before 05 October 2017 - Should a user cancel their connection with us before 18 months of service, they will be charged a pro-rated amount to recover the initial offer extended. What this means is, for example, if a user receives an overall credit of R3600 on signup, and cancels after 8 months, that they will be charged an amount pro-rata for the remaining 10 months – in the case of this example that would equate to R2000. This is to cover the capital outlay incurred by Afrihost to provision infrastructure and hardware required in facilitating the fibre connection to users.

10.8 Applicable to signups on or after 05 October 2017 - Should a user cancel their Afrihost Fibre less than 6 months from installation, they will be charged a fee of R999 to recover costs for the Wi-Fi Router.

So only signups before 5 October 2017 have to pay a prorata amount for the installation + router.

If you signed up after 5 October 2017, you have no contractual obligations provided you didn't opt-in for the free router.

Ah thanks, that is useful to know. I'm not actually thrown by the idea of a claw back. Makes sense in most regards if they cover the cost and then you shift ISP within a short period. So it looks like outside of previous specials Afrihost and Cell C are the only two offering? have used Afrihost at various times over the years without much complaint, but know next to nothing about Cell C's service. Claims to be uncapped and unshaped, anyone using them?

Vumatel allows you to pay the R1700 back over a period of up to 6 months.
