VW Up!

Took one for a test drive - wanted to buy it. The steering wheel was in the way of the speedometer, having to move it down, because I'm short - and adjusting the seat higher was not an option (because of my height 1.61) :D (if that makes sense). And the safety belt, with no option to adjust up or down... caught me in my neck :D. Loved it though. Good drive :) The boot space was bothersome.

Yeah, it's practically a match box, but then again, it's larger than some other cars in the segment, Picanto, i10 have around 50 liters less space in the boot. The UP is only available in 3 door at the moment, so I'm guessing you could gooi a few things on the back seat if you need some extra space and aren't carrying anyone back there.

Definitely, not by any means dissing the VW UP, great car, just so happens... I took the Picanto also for a test drive (1.2) and it was slow, struggled in comparison with the VW UP and well, just not as nice, very disappointed... with all the fancy things inside (who cares) - it's how it drives that counts:D. If it wasn't for those two things (speedometer and safety belt) - boot space I can deal with. I would be a happy owner of the VW UP :p I was obsessing for two days straight checking reviews and seems to be positive all around. Safety wise, suspension etc... P.S. Buying the Polo VW Trendline instead...

Pity that VW SA have not decided (probably until they eventually pension off the geriatric Vivo models) to bring in the 5-door version of the Up!, which is also available in the UK with a BlueMotion option, or with the ASG (Automated Shift Gearbox) fitted instead of the conventional 5-speed manual gearbox.

VWSA are some of the biggest retards on planet earth. My hate of VAG is mainly based on what VWSA does.

My Up! is ordered. Should arrive at the dealer tomorrow and will be ready for collection sometime next week.

Lekker man. Good for you...my brief Up! experience was documented here a good few months back.

Just very recently my work colleague replaced her troublesome Smart with a silver base Up!

She was lucky as if was 1st bought by Grandwest for their prizes for players. Some players chose the cash. So these surplus Up! cars sold back to VW as "2nd hand".

So she got her 2015 Up! with like 30km on clock for less than R20k the RRP & a few options were added before the initial sale to Grandwest.

I believe the 5-door models are hitting SA early next year. That really will really make it sell more; we must see what it does for the Vivo.

I still maintain the Up!; even in sparse base spec is; easily the best A-segment car out there.

The best compliment is that driving it makes you feel like you in a bigger more premium car.

Your initial impressions seem to confirm a lot of what I've read about it seeming like a "big" small car. My wife has a CR-V so we really don't need another big vehicle, and we're moving to Cape Town in Jan, so something small and economical just seemed to make sense.

I added the driver and winter packs, as well as the Fender sound system, so the little machine is pretty kitted out. Getting quite excited to take delivery.

Congrats.... Many happy and safe miles. Saw allot of new cars this January :) guess many people taking advantage of 2015 prices before the silly 2016 price increases

Thanks dude. My purchase was definitely decided on due to 2015 prices.

All Glass tailgate like the Brio?

How strong does it look?

This Was the one thing that worried me with these cars,
in a rear end shunt won't the glass just shatter? Sending shards towards you?

Especially if the vehicle behind is bigger than yours, like a taxi.

Motor glass is designed to crumble into blunt pieces thus no flying shards expected.

With a fast taxi rear ending you, glass is the last thing to worry about.

If this was an issue, all hatchbacks would probably have this issue. Up! has 5 star euro NCAP rating.

I'm asked ng some really silly questions here,

So safety glass then, not plate glass?

So won't shatter? Even if you slam it quite firmly?

What if something long is protruding?
Like a ski pole, will it just break, or shatter?

Also as everything is "glued" onto the tailgate
Won't it become hard to open afterwards?

I mean with a normal tailgate, back window can shatter,
But still metal that holds everything together,

In this, if the glass breaks, okay it stay together,
But the handle and mounting to the frame can't that fall off?
Or am I just being paranoid here
