WA lets you manage your line?

Hey guys

Just saw this post on WebAfrica forums.

http://forums.webafrica.co.za/showthread.php/8386-Exciting-announcement-NEW-Line-Management-Tool-for-Web-Africa-Customers

Has anyone else used this new tool?
From what they saying you are able to manage your own line?

Yes, we released this awesome feature on Friday. So guys have a look and see how it works.

Please provide your feedback on our forum thread: http://forums.webafrica.co.za/showt...Line-Management-Tool-for-Web-Africa-Customers

Looks good. I remember suggesting something similar during one of the comps. They should make an option to upgrade your line also.

Can't seem to select 10240 kbps downstream speed even though my exchange supports it?

Joker, please PM your client code and I can have a look into this for you.

Think I figured it out - my line speed was 8128 kbps, first had to change it back down to 8032, then I was able to select 10240.

After that I still only synched to 8128, with a message my line couldn't handle anything higher.

Still, good job guys

this is awesome , i have the up to 10mps service :P

see if my line can do 8mps.

Edit:seems the max is 6mb for me :(

From what it looks like on the screenshot ("Current Telkom profile speed" at 10240kbps) you were already on the 10mbps profile :P

Pretty useful tool.

That is an awesome tool. Very nice to be able to manage your own connection speed and reset ports.

Is it a distance issue? Whats your attenuation?

You should make sure your line is as clean as possible (no big electrics are running near your copper - eg; washing machines). You could also try unplug your other phones, and restart/resync your router to see if it improves the SNR. I've seen bad micro-filters mess up the SNR.

PS. Thanks for the kudos and feedback everyone - keep it coming :)

Sometimes Telkom limit the port speed on a DSLAM to 6mbit/sec if either you had too many port resets on your line in the past, or the DSLAM's uplink is actually close to be congested, so to prevent the 10mbit users to make it bad for everyone, they limit it to 6mbit.

Downstream speed
6144 kbps
Downstream SNR
21 dB

Upstream speed
635 kbps
Upstream SNR
15 dB

Max downstream speed
6144 kbps
Downstream attenuation
42 dB

Current Telkom profile speed
6144 kbps
Upstream attenuation
21.6 dB

think its because i am bit far away :(

Damn. Yeah, based on that attenuation dB it looks like you're about 3.0 - 3.5km's from the exchange (Does that sound about right?)

The following guide (distance vs. attenuation vs speed) gives you an guestimate what you can achieve:
<1km should be 23-24Mbit (nice speed, but doesn’t it bug you that Telkom people walk through your bedroom?)
1.0km = 13.81dB = 23Mbit
1.5km = 20.7dB = 21Mbit
2.0km = 27.6dB = 18Mbit
2.5km = 34.5dB = 13Mbit
3.0km = 41.4dB = 8Mbit
3.5km = 48.3dB = 6Mbit
4.0km = 56dB = 4Mbit
4.5km = 62.1dB = 3Mbit
5.0km = 69dB = 2Mbit
>5.0km (you are pretty much poked — sorry for you)
