Ok - I'll insert "Fred" but its still a load of crap.

And if I want to d/l a legal download via BT? Should I still have to get an outdated technology like diginet? The legality of the material downloaded is irrelevant.

tinuva they say uncapped, i never saw them say uncapped with no illegal downloads

so they are like ayce, they also lied. uncapped everyone signs then they stop illegal downloads. how can you trust this company!!!!!!!!!!!

but ayce realised or got lucky they implemented a cap or they would be in the same situation but foresite or luck saved them.

tinuva you have uncapped adsl im guessing. why would you need uncapped if you not d/ling illegal stuff? what could you possibly download that amounts to more than 30 gigs?
like i said just now did UUNET not think that with uncapped ppl would download illegal stuff 24/7. dont offer something you cant handle. they must have known they wouldnt handle it but money is money so they just thought they could fix it at a later stage.

anyway its not the users that are to blame for the poor network its UUNET's poor foresite or lack of it.

C'mon dudes. The legality of your activity has got absolutely f***-all to do with the ISP's/backbones. Nothing is illegal until you get caught and you're guilty unil proven by a bla...bla...bla...

The point is. If you are paying for a service, a service is what you must get. I don't care if the little post net around the corner is having trouble sending mail when I want to download a 3gb bittorrent.

Just like him, I'm a paying customer and expect to be treated that way.

many of the linux distro'z are moving to bittorrent atm, some ONLY available via bittorrent. Which obvioulsy makes sense to them, as the bittorrent protocal allows the users to take some of the seeding load off the distro's connection.

those who dislike torrents... blablablablabla ... its far too widely used. and as shown above... for those company's wanting to distrobute its software... its perfect.

it has legitamate use... that is growing daily. UUNET need to cater for it, or they will lose the majority of their clients.

Careful silversurfer - you'll run afoul of the ignorant or ill-informed who claim bit torrents are pure unadulterated evil. :)

Second that!

Look I didnt bring the illegal downloads into this. What I try to say is, if you want bandwidth on demand, diginet is just that. Its not really outdated, infact its a digital technology whilst adsl in south africa (annexx A) is still a analog technology...

I always though ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) was digital. My mistake obviously.

Bit torrent 2 should see the light soon, the excess overhead mentioned with the current BT protocol has been tweaked and recently they noted that all the negatives from BT protocol has been ironed out and only need to be implimented to say hello to BT 2 :)

Cant wait and this will silence all those people going on about the damn excess overhead.

Yes, you are mistaken.

Like what? Debian doesnt, Ubuntu has plenty of FTP/HTTP mirrors, FreeBSD doesnt advocate Bittorent in the slightest, and if you're using anything else you're wasting your time anyway.

Lets think about it.

Who is crying at the moment? People who use bittorrent obviously - for whatever reason they use it, personaly I dont care.

two things.

1) A home service is contended, a home service is not guranteed. You have a 512Kb connection - but what people cant get into their thick skulls is that flat lining it 24/7 is harmfull to the internet due to contention ratios. From UUNet's standpoint they have other customers who pay much much more for their peering (well over R20K/m for dedicated 512K internation if I'm not mistaken). On top of that, Telkoms recent cock-up-your-arse attitude to peering relationships has hurt ISP's such as UUNet and IS in a big way.

2) Bittorrent is not an essential service - however much you cry and moan it isn't - its a problem, because its abused. Is buying more bandwidth to satisfy your lust for 24/7 full speed (and most likely illegal anyway) downloads going to make UUNet more money? Probably not - Is walling silly bandwidth abusive protocols going to save them bandwidth and keep their business clients happy? Most certainly, yes.

I really dont see how I'm the one who needs to "switch on my brain" here. Honestly.

agree with you!!!

To add to that, I think from the start UUNet and IS's curent uncapped DSL offerings - especialy given the price tag, are not aimed at home users.

This might come as a shock so brace your self, get a normal DSL account like a normal person, put the money towards a better car, and get a girlfriend - if you're married - get one anyway. If that doesnt suit you, I'm sure you can get a 4x4 on terms and go enjoy the outdoors, I love water skiing, much more enjoyable than Bittorent.

But then why it has been sold to home-users? The normal business-user don't need an uncapped service.

What do you consider as normal? 3 GB? Come on...You can't be serious. And unfortunately not everyone is capable of just getting out and enjoy the nature.

Anymore of proposals?

Normal, I dont know.. It costs UUNet around R20,000 for a 512K circuit, so you instantly have a 30:1 contention ratio with almost zero profit. Do you think normal use is 512K * 24/7 ? Do you think it is fair to expect that to be considered "normal use"?

If people are paying through their nose (R400,000/m) for around 900GB/m transfer - And people are maxing out their DSL to achieve about 160GB/m (downstream). I dont think I need to help you with the maths there either - is that "normal use"?

Simple economics (and the behavior of people on this forum) tells me that demand is inelastic, so providing good service and decreasing prices doesnt make the suppliers more money - because people are still naive enough to pay for it.

Is 512K worth R20,000/m ? No. Is 512K worth R2000/m? No.

Why are people still paying for it? If you did, I think you're out of reasons to complain that UUNet are trying to improve the service by cutting down on traffic with a rather engineering orriented solution. Most likely, the reason they did this was that the bittorent traffic was killing peering links (as very little was "seeded" from within their network). If you're doing that, I'm sure you have more than enough money to buy a capped Telkom account and abuse that localy - since you already have the girlfriend and the car.

If you're implying that my use of Gentoo has been a waste of my time for the past 3 years, I'm gonna smack your head so that your brain is indeed switched on, you silly na-na... :) :D
