We apologize for the downtime

This is not acceptable! I want my membership fees back!

... oh wait! :p

Hi folks

The power went out in the Verizon Data Centre in Johannesburg at around 16:00 where our servers are hosted at Hetzner, and this resulted in the downtime which lasted a few hours.

I have spent some time in the Verizon Data Centre, company I used to work for had servers there and I can vouch for the outages, we had a few from time to time.

Well Telkom and Eskom sustain major strikes too, no matter how much they invest in lightning arresting systems. I live in an area with some major Eskom feeder lines running through and these lines get whacked something chronic and on a regular basis too and often it causes damage with outages running sometimes 8-12 hours, one time even 36 hours.

I am sure Verizon/Hetzner will take steps to not let this happen again, they have invested serious money into that data centre.

Trust me, it will happen again, without a doubt. It is not always in their control. We had a situation once where all our bank links dropped due to a Telkom line running within the building bgeing faulty, took a couple of hours to fix and the only guys to fix it was Telkom. Sometimes it really is out of their control.
