Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Torrent's on a home capped product... less than 10kB/s down on a 6mb line. I really didn't think torrents are shaped this badly on a capped line??
what speeds do you get for torrents between 12am and 6am?
ive pm'ed the wa rep to ask as well
thanks
regards

Slowest I've seen torrents on my home capped account is about 50% line speed. Usually more than that. Even on a Home uncapped I tested about 40% line speed.

Not sure actually. I just leave the PC on with the scheduler running and forget about it. I've previously got pretty decent speeds for torrents, but today was something special. Just ridiculous.

I flipped back to my spare afrihost account and it runs up to 400+kB/s, so think I'm gonna go back to Afrihost from next month. Reduced shaping is the reason I went for a capped account, now its even worse than uncapped?!

thats why i took a business capped account as well
guess ill be in touch with afrihost as well
which account is it that you used with afrihost?
thanks

What's the latency generally like?

Running speedtest to Cape Town yields +100ms, Jo'burg +200 and International +300
Down- and upload speeds are fairly consistent with a 4Mbps line.

My other ISP with an unshaped capped account shows expected results for local (30-40ms) and international < 200ms

Hi MrR,

Are you still experiencing issues with your latency?

What happens if you're "normal" bandwidth runs out before your "free" bandwidth?

If it does run out you wont be able to use the account during the day and only the download plus after 12am.

Ok - and if the reverse happens? Your download plus runs out first?

Doing ok at the moment, but about to try streaming TV again.

Billing issue still not sorted out. No phonecall. No reply to ticket. I'm quite happy to leave it and pay you R299 for a R599 account. Perhaps around 2020 someone will notice.

Still waiting on a response to the support ticket myself. The only reason I'm not more angry is that they're undercharging me for this month, instead of over. Lack of support was the reason I moved my hosting away from WA - thought I'd have less issues just having an ADSL account running. Hopefully once this is sorted, I never have to deal (or rather, try to get hold of) their support staff again.

Hi Seeyou,

Has our team managed to get your issue sorted? If not PM me your email address so I can assist with it.

Wow, this is now. Seems like its only during business hours

You shouldn't experience shaping of torrents after hours. Have you spoken to our ADSL support to investigate your line and the torrents speed issues?

If not PM me your email address and I will get our team to investigate.

Why do Webafrica never respond to tickets? I was never this way before.

Really disappointed at the moment with customer service.

Hi Diesel44,

Has our team managed to get your issues resolved?

So one week with WebAfrica capped (90Gb + 90Gb / 4Mb line) now - coming from Afrihost uncapped.

So far I'm pretty impressed. Signup was smooth and I received my login details before the account went live.

Daytime Performance:

Definitely a step up from Afrihost. Browsing is snappy and I can actually do the occasional download at close to my line speed vs being throttled to death. YouTube streaming is good. I do get some buffering at 720p which I hoped I would not but this may be my line and a bit of congestion (my neighbors on both sides also have a bit of line noise atm). Tested NZB's during the day a few times and got full speed as well.

Evening Performance:

I have SABNZB set to download from 12:10am to 5:50am to be sure to stay in download plus hours. Speed is generally just under my line speed so no complaints there.

Only funny is even though I sent through debit order details my account is still unpaid - this my just be a month 1 thing so as long as next month is fine its all good.

Thanks for the feedback and glad to hear you enjoying the account. If your payment method is Debit order it only reflects as paid 7 days after the debit has been taken.

My line went down and phoned support - quickly answered by Mujeeb who is one of the old hands at WA. Great service from him - as always - followed up by a call from him a few minutes ago with feedback. :) Way to go

WA needs more staff of his calibre.

Thanks for the Feedback Fulton17! :D I have sent this onto Mujeeb and our team.

Ahoy,

WebAfrica....

Bring out a Business Content Filtering solution that is Cheap to use and you will win over some market share back from the other ISP's eating your pie.

It's frustrating trying to implement systems at various branches and places sometimes and not worth the hassle and maintenance at the end of the day. If I was able to manage it through my ISP control panel I would be all win :).

Hi Tera,

Thanks for the suggestion :) I have passed this onto out Product team for review and hopefully we can implement something like this.

Are WA Home Capped accounts shaped during the week? I'm getting my full 2Mb line speed on everything except P2P which runs at 5-10% of my line speed.

P2P will be shaped during business hrs on all home accounts but it should improve after 5pm.

I signed for a business capped account with webafrica yesterday.
Speeds were ok except for p2p
Running at 0.5-5kBps on a 4meg line

I checked after midnight as well - during download plus time
Speeds were also around 10, sometimes max 20kBps in short bursts.

I was under impression we would get full line speed between midnight and 6am???

Can anyone confirm?
Thanks
Regards

PM received and I have asked our team to take a look and provide feedback.

Hi
Thanks for your help
Just to be clear- everything else is fine except for p2p
I tried out the streaming last night and it was perfect without any glitches
Downloads were running 400+ kBps
When I tried a different ISP the torrent speed picked up
Thanks
Regards

Yes, all have been resolved. Thank you for asking.

Capped account are running well. Will be upgrading this to a 90Gb package in next month.

I see on my usage for my capped account there is "Freezone" data. What counts as free zone? I can't recall using any wa gaming servers or anything.

I am on the R1 promotion.
I’m an ADSL newbie with my ADSL only being installed yesterday, so I have quite a few queries.

1. How do I test the speed of my connection? I’m supposed to be on a 2MB line.
2. Where do I see my usage and remaining bundle/cap?
3. My installation (Telkom Simple) came with a free Pace modem/router. I have been connecting via wifi (cellphone and tablet) since it was installed yesterday. Will the cable connection from modem to PC give better/faster speeds than the Wi-Fi connection and how much better?
4. When do I need to give notice to void paying the normal R149 per month? And when will I have to stop using the service? So far so good, but I might not be able to afford this in the future as my wife just resigned. Until such time that she gets another job I might want to look at cheaper ADSL alternatives.
5. What happens if my cap runs out? I must admit I never thought about it. Hopefully nothing like the cellular providers and their OOB charging?

Two ways.
1. Log onto your router and check your sync speed.
2. www.speedtest.net

2. Where do I see my usage and remaining bundle/cap?
Log onto the webafrica website
3. My installation (Telkom Simple) came with a free Pace modem/router. I have been connecting via wifi (cellphone and tablet) since it was installed yesterday. Will the cable connection from modem to PC give better/faster speeds than the Wi-Fi connection and how much better?
Cable will always be more stable. Especially if you have a lot of devices using the wifi.
4. When do I need to give notice to void paying the normal R149 per month? And when will I have to stop using the service? The R1 special is valid for 2 months so you'd need to cancel in may. The pricing isn't though. Consider continuing the package or upgrading to one with more gigs if you need.
5. What happens if my cap runs out? I must admit I never thought about it. Hopefully nothing like the cellular providers and their OOB charging?
There's no OOB charge. You just get cutoff. Remember though that you have night time data to use as well.

Doing ok at the moment, but about to try streaming TV again.

When download plus kicks in at 12am it will just use your anytime data for anything used during that time.
