Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Depending on your monthly usage, another option would be a high volume capped account maybe?

I am on one of the MyBB capped accounts and would say that +95% of the time it performs (10 meg line). My bigger frustrations have been with mixed support (person dependant) but for day to day stuff, more than happy. Just my 2 cents :)

Hope you come right with a good set up whichever way you end up going

Thanks Fulton, good to have an all-round view of them with both good and bad.
Thing is, I can average out my utilization, but some months I might want to suddenly download three seasons of a given series in 720p, you're looking at around 60-80 GBs just on that one transaction. So I'd personally like to not worry about my utilization for reasons such as the above.
Hmmm... I've got issues with messed up support, that's why I want to leave Afrihost.
No ownership and continuity.

I made the mistake to try the MWEB 4mbps uncapped account and I'm throttled after a few weeks. Did less than I usually do on my WA Red Africa account.

What is the WA policy on throttling? What is the average threshold on a 4mbps uncapped account before being throttled?

With Web Africa it all depends on how you use your account. There is no threshold limit. Basically if you download during download plus hours (00:00 - 6:00) your star rating will stay on 5 and speeds will remain fast. If you download a lot during the day your star rating will drop, the lower your rating, the more shaping you will experience.

You say you had a Red account. That was capped? Why not take a look at Web Africa's capped products then?

Why didn't you grab a premium account?

Thanks. All my Sickbeard and SABNzb downloads are scheduled for that time anyway so it seems this will be a better option. (see reason for wanting to go uncapped below)

I wanted to stay as close to the R199 I paid for my Red Africa account.

I average around 120GB per month and a lot of those are HD Youtube videos about photography and Lightroom tutorials (series/movies avg 60GB). Reason I had to let go of the Red Africa account is because the 30GB any time data was not enough any more. Had to buy top ups the last few months and I thought the MWEB uncapped will be better.... Guess not.

EDIT: I also cancelled my DSTV account months ago so over weekends I stream 1 or 2 rugby games.

I do about 120-140GB a month, purely streaming and gaming. I'm on 2 stars and the service can be horrendous, even after 18:00. Weekends during the day there also seems to be issues.

I'm not a happy camper since I'm not abusing my account, but I'm being punished. I thought 4GB a day would be reasonable.

Can anybody explain in detail how their AUP works? Because this doesn't feel any different to being throttled.

To be on 2stars with that usage probably means you're on 2Meg. You should upgrade to business or 4meg home.

I am so badly throttled even MyBB is struggling to load. My son wanted COD Ghost and I decided to get BF 4 around the 26 - 30 April (It took 4 days to d/l). Now the interwebz at home is dead.

I've been with WA for ages but my sagely advice is save your big downloads for download plus hours. After chatting to the one rep it seems that on average around 4gigs per day is a good margin to stay within.

For gaming, they are fantastic IMO. Despite being throttled, I still ping between 10 - 50 ms to most local BF 4 servers; WOT (EU) sits at around 250 ms.

I really think anybody that wants proper surfing and gaming should get a capped account, then leave the uncapped account only for the big downloads :)

Nope, 4MB Uncapped account.

That's the problem, you cannot do big downloads on these uncapped accounts. The moment you do a little bit of traffic you get "shaped" (quotes, because it feels like throttling). You cannot even stream for more than a few hours a day before getting in trouble. The only option is giving in to the extortion and paying more to get the service level you are expecting.

I'm unable to play BF4 in this state, since console servers are overseas I guess. I should upload a video of the gameplay, it reminds of playing Quake1 on 28.8 back in 1996.

Last night my Netflix was OK, but during the day the service was useless.

But regardless of star rating at around 17:00 or 18:00 the shaping gets lifted.

Will have to double check that, since the only time I'm able to play BF4 is over weekends or late in the evenings. The lag is unbearable. E.g. wife trying to play Diablo 3 on PC with a ping of 2000ms at about 20:00.

Should we be shaped to death even on weekends during the day?

Just got an e-mail from WA that I owe them for the past 4 months. You have my CC details, you've always automatically processed it so why you stopped is beyond me. If you want my money, just take it! E-mailed the billing dept.

Got an email that I owe R2. I use a credit card for payment and dont see the option to run payments...

I've had the account for 2 months, I'm pretty sure the payment ran when I first activated the account.

How do I find the option to clear payments with credit cards?

I sorted out an issue with them at the start of the year with regards to the incorrect invoice. They never sorted out, even though I queried so I took it as them being wrong. Now they say I owe them. I think their billing department is in shambles

They will be processed by Web Africa, you don't have to do anything, as long as your bank or credit card details are there ;)

Hmm. Sounds like you need a capped or business account...
