Web Africa ADSL general feedback

I'm considering signing up uncapped with WA. Any feedback on network stability and billing would be appreciated from the MB community.

Also, please give me the summarized AUP for dummies. Too lazy to read it.

Oh... I'm throttled with Mweb having downloaded 500 or 600 gb in 30 days.

I don't wanna be throttled but if I need to dl the inter webs so be it :)

Basically if you need to download all the torrents during the day, get a business or capped account. Your account is prioritised according to a star rating, the more you use the lower your star rating gets. I've been down to 3 stars and my downloads were throttled during the day. After 5pm or so speeds return to normal - i.e. you are throttled when the network is busy and unthrottled when the network has available capacity. Downloading from midnight to 6 am doesn't count towards your star rating - so use as much as you like between those hours without worrying about it affecting your daytime speeds.

Business accounts are also prioritised according to a star rating system but the thresholds are very high - you can ask Chevron about business accounts (he has one)

If you want something from Web Africa, here:

1. What is the Star Rating system and why does it exisit?

The Web Africa star rating system forms part of our Acceptable Usage Policy which is a set of rules that is put in place to protect users who aren’t abusing their uncapped accounts from those who are.

It’s there to make sure abusers of our service do not receive the same quality uncapped service as those who stick to the rules. It’s clear, simple and fair. If you stick to it, you’ll get the most out of your Uncapped ADSL.

Our Uncapped ADSL makes use of the percentage based system in the form of star ratings, which allows for more usage than our previous rolling window system and provides a better experience to all Uncapped users.

The system takes usage and network capacity into account and is updated dynamically. The star rating is from 1 to 5, with 5 stars being the best. We display your current star rating in your DSL Console, so you know where you stand at all times.

2. What can I expect as a user at different star ratings?

Home Uncapped makes use of Silver quality bandwidth, Business Uncapped makes use of Titanium quality bandwidth and Business Uncapped Pro makes use of Gold quality bandwidth. Read more about our bandwidth priorities here.

Based on the users’ average usage, we prioritise the users’ bandwidth at different star levels within the bandwidth profile. If a user is at 5 stars, they will receive the best quality bandwidth the respective profile has to offer. If a user has a 1 Star rating, they will receive a degraded service.

To give an indication of how the service operates at the different star levels.

5 Star: Great usage on all services, torrents and news server downloads may be slightly slower dependent on network load.
4 Star: Voice services (Skype) and gaming will be great, along with general browsing. Downloads will be slightly slower.
3 Star: Voice services (Skype) and gaming will be good. Your YouTube videos will take slightly longer to load, general browsing and mail will still be quick.
2 Star: General browsing, mail and online video will perform slightly slower. Voice and gaming services will be good, downloads will take some time.
1 Star: General browsing, mail and online video will perform slightly slower. Voice and gaming services will be functional, downloads will take some time.

NOTE: It is important to note that deprioritisation will generally take effect when the network is under load, so a low star rating will not always mean you will see degraded performance if there is spare network capacity available. Network load will naturally be higher during office hours, so you may expect slower performance for non-crucial services and protocols during that time period on a lower star rating.

3. How long will I be at a specific star rating for?

We monitor all Uncapped users’ average usage every hour and establish usage patterns. If a user falls within the top percentile, we deprioritise there service accordingly. This therefore is completely dynamic and based off the usage patterns on the base, though a user can fall in and out of a certain star rating every hour, depending on their average usage patterns

4. Where can I monitor my usage and current star rating?

We have made it exceptionally simple to monitor your usage of your ADSL account via our DSL Console.

Login to your Customer Zone, go to your ADSL service.
Click on Management Actions and login to your DSL console

On the DSL Console you will be shown your current star rating along with usage totals done during the current month. You also have the ability to view and export historical usage patterns and export hourly breakdowns to Excel in CSV format.

5. Are there any exclusions?

While we do monitor usage done during Download Plus hours (between 00:00 and 06:00), it does not count towards your Star rating.

We would highly suggest scheduling large downloads to be done during these hours as to avoid the usage counting to your star rating and affecting your Uncapped performance.

Network is very stable on my side - can't remember the last time I had any problems.

Billing is ok, support is just quite slow via e-mail, always better to just phone them to sort anything out.

Thanks. I'm seriously considering WA.

What would you suggest my I do about my dsl line. I should probably move that back to Telkom right? Would it be any more advantageous to move it to WA? Slightly cheaper I guess. Then just sign up with WA as my business uncapped ISP and downgrade my MWEB account to the 1GB offering. And then cancel MWEB?

If your line is with Mweb currently, then you will have to move it back to Telkom before you can do anything. If you don't have any line issues then I would just let it be ;) Eventually you would want to move it back, as, if or when you do get issues, it's best to post a fault online with telkom.co.za yourself instead of relying on some middleman. The money you end up saving isn't worth it in my opinion, coz I believe in the philosophy of - you want something done right, do it yourself. Whenever I've had issues, I just logged a fault online, then "escalated" it through 10210, and it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be!

Sorry WA, but due to your 30 cancellation policy, I would rather suggest Incredible Connection as they are pretty much identical regarding what you get (a more limited clientzone like Plugg but so what! If you don't like it, cancel before the 25th and move on!), if you want to cut out the middle man but pay a little more then Plugg is the way to go, and this is the way I would go, even if it's more money, just because they have Janitor on their team and he's like a superhero! ;)

My 2c :)

EDIT: But, in saying all that, I suddenly remembered your 600GB usage comment and you're thinking about business, well IC have that too, and would assume that it would be pretty similar barring the 30 day and client panel!

Just grab the free WA capped account to test. It performs the same as business uncapped. This has been my favourite account so far.

Does the 30 day thing not bug you?

My experience is: eventually said ISP will drop the ball, forcing you to make a move, and I would hate for that move to take 60 days!

Not at all. This busniess account is the best I have ever used. I don't see myself ever changing.

I agree with you and am not surprised that it is working for you because IS know how to do things, I'm just bringing up the hypothetical, which would turn you sour because you would have to wait out 60 days.

IC (no 30 day) also have "business" accounts, how do their prices compare? (My linespeed question)

Don't really care. You get what you pay for when it comes to ADSL. I want someting that works. If you want cheap go right ahead.

What I'm saying is that it is of my opinion that IC and WA can be compared apples for apples ;)

You can monitor your stars with both, granted IC's CZ isn't as snazzy, but so what?

Aren't you the least bit curious as to if IC's bus acc behaves the same for R100 less, with the bonus of the option of cancelling before the 25th and be done with it?

I can't find what you're talking about ob their site, but would be probably be the same account as Plugg is IS's consumer division.

Do you work for incredible?

I'm pretty sure they don't behave the same. I've used a standard Internet Solutions account for a year and a half (which I'm pretty sure IC's accounts are) and I've used Web Africa and the two work quite differently with regards to shaping etc.
I also find the stability of my Web Africa account much better when the need for real time services comes about. For example, on Web Africa as soon as I start a Google Hangout, start browsing or start an online game, my torrents are slowed greatly to allow the real time service to have preference. This happens on the capped and uncapped accounts but it never happened on the Internet Solutions account I had (unless IC's accounts are different?)

Hi Guys,

We have no reported network issues at present nor over the past couple of days and if you are having issues I would recommend you contact our ADSL support on 0860 009500 or email on [email protected] as soon as the problem occurs so they can investigate immediately. Our support are open from 6am-11:59pm everyday to assist with any issues you might have with any of our services and you can submit a support ticket via our Client Zone.

Please make sure you have speed test results as well as trace route (local and international) results available when you call or send in a ticket as this will assist our team in troubleshooting the problem.

Hi Justin,

On of my clients has a complicated issue with their dialup with WA. Call centre cannot assist. Do I pm you or post here?

Ye, I have to give you that ;)

WA use the priority system giving some protocols higher priority on the network, IC are similar to Plugg, where I think they behave like unshaped (all protocols equal). Like Janitor explains, two pizza's with different toppings :D

-sigh- One of those days. I deliberately stopped using my Webafrica "Uncapped" account for more than 2 weeks so that my star rating can go down. Sitting on 5-stars but now I have this:
