Morning zerofivetwosix,

Can you please drop me a PM with your client code and telephone number that you're ADSL line is on. I'd like to have a look at a few things from my end to explain as to why your line is slow.

Hi Jeff,

Yes, it would appear to be that. Did tests with three other providers and get similar results. :(

Thanks again for all the help!!!!

Unfortunately if the same results are delivered from the test account, it definitely points to an Exchange issue - so with Telkom. Vaughn will be in contact shortly, he'll be logging the fault for you.

I've been having some issues since early/mid week and thought it might be ISP(WA) related, but after some test and the usual(checking line stats and other things), it appears to be exchange related, which is very inconvenient as the whole weekend I was getting round about 600-800ms on locally...

Just waiting for a response on my ticket with Telkom to fix it... /sigh

What is the easiest and most reliable way to confirm that the exchange is overloaded?

Tracert? What should the latency be when for it to be classified as normal or abnormal?

Getting tired of ratting on WebAfrica's door for these slow speeds and want to find out if maybe the exchange is to blame.

Get a cheap alternative account (with another ISP, preferably using a different international connection), if the problem persists it is either your PC/Router/Exchange. A tracert would if the problem is real bad give you high latencies on the first hops, but in my experience it is difficult to duplicate what you experience in normal usage with diagnostic tools.

still going good on my side. can do easily 10GB from 12am til 6am. only now and then when i stream it fluctuates

When I came home and half an hour go, I connected but could not browse, stream internet radio etc. Now I have access, but things still not right.

What is good is that my latency is low - could this be lasting!!

Great Scott!

I very rarely see these type of speeds, if ever.

Hope they can keep it like this now.

Update:

Apparently not.

Morning Roadrunner,

I'd definitely say a tracert to a site, if the exchange is really broken it'll clearly show on hop 2. If it's intermittant, or maybe a little bit slow you can drop me a PM with your client code and telephone number and I'll see what I can dig up for you :)

Hi Fulton,

How was the performance for the rest of the night? No reported issues on this end at the time of posting, or last night. Did you try with an alternative account by chance or contact our ADSL guys?

Here's what happens with me so far every day:
I get home from work at around 16:30, I do a tracert to WA's site and I get 7-20ms on most of the hops.
I check 30 minutes later it jumped to around 100-200ms and goes down a bit later to around 70-150ms, but still showing that something is going wrong.
I'd then check it later that evening and it would be anything between 500-800ms on each jump.

When I phoned telkom on Saturday and did a speedtest I got 500ms to the Cape Town server...(the whole weekend was bad and almost feels like non-workday hours, is where the issues are)

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the follow up.

I did not call support at the time as I had a meeting; when I came back I was up and running. Did not do a lot of browsing last night, but mostly good. DL+ was flying so all seemed good. Did not use another account.

Latency is great - if this last.... will be a pleasure

That usually points to a congested exchange (DSLAM) in a residential area, where peak times are non-business hours, obviously when most people are at home using the internet.

Please drop me a PM with your client code and ADSL line number so I can have a look at this for you :)
If possible, please include a tracert to a slow website.

Hi Jeff,

Was about to do it and the slow web site is fine again now (our host www.pair.com).

I've given up trying to figure this out. I just come here and bitch now and again ;)

Am thinking this must be the exchange then.

How can anyone not be pissed off at this?
