Web Africa ADSL general feedback

I see that my account was corrected and put back on 5 stars (despite my average usage increasing) :). Thank you for the help, now just clone yourself and make sure that only you and your clones may respond to support tickets ;).

From now on I'll just PM you directly when I have issues. I advise everyone else to do the same.

Awesome stuff :D Just glad I could assist in getting things sorted for you.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Our capped accounts perform very well. On a Home based account non essential protocols like P2P/NNTP, etc are shaped during the day but not by much and will return to normal after hrs.

I would suggest you sign up for our free 2gb for life account and see how it performs. It is on the same bandwidth profile as our normal capped accounts.

Could you PM me your account details so I can take a look into this.

I went to check on your products page and according to Here home capped and business uncapped are both "Titanium" level bandwidth, how could home capped more accurately be described then ?

Since yesterday, NNTP is now being shaped VERY heavily during the day on capped accounts. Whereas before, if I had a download to run during office hours, I could expect between 600-900k/sec depending on how busy the network was, I can now not achieve greater than 300k/sec. This is more like throttling than shaping. Is this new policy permanent? I reserve most of my downloads for the Free Download Plus hours, but if I can only download at less than 4mb speeds on bandwidth I'm paying you for when I need something during office hours, I'll take my business elsewhere.

Before anyone jumps in and says "It's a home account so it is shaped more during business hours" I'll like to remind them that Web Africa does market Home Capped on "Titanium" bandwidth, the same as business uncapped, I know I get faster than that on my 10mbit business uncapped so whats the deal ?

A while back I mentioned having some odd issues with gmail. After some PM back and forth with Webafrica Helper, I was told that I'm not routing to mail.google.com on the expected path. I realised that my Shrew VPN is overriding my DNS lookup for mail.google.com when it was not supposed to. When the VPN is disconnected, routing seems to be normal and also much faster - 30ms vs 200ms to the gmail server. The laggy issues seemed to take place when the VPN DNS server tells me to use a new IP for mail.google.com.

So for anyone using a VPN and also use a DNS suffix for their home LAN, I suspect what happens is Windows doesn't know which adapter's DNS server to use for google.com because both the VPN and LAN adapters have specific DNS suffixes. I think if your home LAN (and home router DNS server) does not use a DNS suffix Windows may use the LAN DNS first for domains that are not on the VPN.

So some how-to-fix pointers:
* http://superuser.com/questions/314328/active-available-dns-servers
* https://lists.shrew.net/pipermail/vpn-help/2012-February/013714.html
* http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Hyper-V-Network-VSP-Bind-cf937850

I have now manually changed the binding order to place my VPN adapters at the very end. Now things seem to function as desired. I think the reason I correlated this behaviour with WebAfrica is because I started using a .home suffix for my home LAN at around the same time I switched to WebAfrica.

Is this on capped accounts? I've noticed I'm hardly getting more than 200kb on my 10mb account during the day. urgently need a file and getting 100kb.

Putting in notice today

Which NNTP server are you using?

@praeses - Tweaknews

After hours and during Download Plus I get 1MB/sec, and if I switch to Afrihost capped during the day, I'll get close to 1MB/sec too.

Getting 120k/sec at the moment, 10mb line + capped account. Think I may follow suit - pity this wasn't instituted before the 25th, or perhaps that was intentional..

Well Afrihost capped is unshaped, so shaping could be playing a role. Maybe do a tracert to the Tweaknews server with your WA and AH accounts to rule out some routing issues maybe?

Very poor show - capped account been throttled. My DL is all over the place so seems like something WA is doing in general

End of the month maybe?

It's not just home capped accounts, decided to test on my 10mbit uncapped business (with 5 stars rating). 110KB/s , after hours its about 1MB/s

Traceroutes show normal latency to NNTP server on every hop, no timeouts or dropped packets.

This is throttling of NNTP, pure and simple. Very disappointing, WA. Unfortunately for me, I can't even downgrade in time for next month, but I'll definitely be cancelling before the end of the month if this is the new norm.

Hi guys,

I have asked our network guys to take a look into the P2P & NNTP issues during the day. I will provide feedback soon.

Sorry for the inconvenience everyone.
