Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Hi Guys,

I have taken this up with our Network team and need the following from anyone having streaming issues:

  • Local and International speed test results;
  • Local and International trace route results; and
  • Account details

Please PM me the above so I can pass it onto our guys.

Funnily enough that's on my paid for 15GB capped account, when I connect on Webafrica free 1GB account its fine, lol.

So basically proves that the demo accounts are given higher priority than paid for accounts, company driven by marketing, not quality...

Hi Shard,

Have you connected to the free account before this as it normally takes about +/- 15mins for IS to assign the correct profile to an account connected to for the first time so it could have just been that the profile was not correctly assigned.

Could you test again?

Not to be an ass about it but what use would that be? Speed and ping tests show no issues at all, it's just that streaming (youtube mostly) is utterly crap. 144p struggles.

Ok, so I want to switch ISP's next month, right now it's a toss up betweem WA and CW, crystal web offers 200gigs of unshaped data on a 10mbps account but that data will be used up in half the month, so I am left with half a month of shaping...Not ideal for my situation at home, now WA are having a lot of problems at the moment, it may be isolated but don't want to take that chance...sorry for the long post, just need some advice on who would be the better ISP, it just doesn't have to be the two i mentioned...

If you can schedule your downloads for Midnight you'll love Web Africa. All usage between 00:00 and 06:00 doesn't affect thresholds or shaping.

Ok, I can schedule my heavy downloads for midnight...some of them won't be possible though...Does streaming ever get shaped no matter what star you are on?

Remember that while you will be shaped with CW, the shaping is only on P2P and large downloads, during office hours. And if you still need to download during the day you won't get throttled or punished because the unshaped services will always remain unshaped.

Streaming should always be good. I've seen people on 3 and 2 stars stream fine. Even if your stars are low after 17:00 the shaping loosens up anyway. Almost like you get free stars.

Are you looking at home or business? I'd recommend business.

Thanks, but still very much doubtful about CW, I mean they shape you down to 15Kbps, that's insane, I don't want to pay over R1000 a month and be that heavily shaped on some downloads...

Then you'll be fine.

You won't even drop a star if half of that is at night.

So, if over the course of a month, my bandwidth usage is 450gbs, 250gb's for large downloads( about 80% done after midnight) and the rest is streaming, would I be okay or how many stars would I drop down?
Sorry to the users following this thread, my apologies for asking these questions in a feedback thread...

You shouldn't drop down at all.

And even if you do it's only p2p that gets shaped. After midnight p2p is unshaped again.

Where did you here this? I downloaded a driver yesterday and it maxed my line, and I've exceeded the unshaped portion.

I saw it on the feedback thread :

Crystal Web rep:
Yes, that is how the accounts work. All data is unshaped for up to 400 gigs on some packages and thereafter certain large downloads are shaped during peak load times. If you're expecting shaping to be released during peak times on p2p and nntp then a standard uncapped account is not right for your needs.

Currently when shaped, it only applies to large downloads and released at midnight - if you want gaming, streaming, browsing, VPN (unshaped at all times as standard) and then p2p and nntp unshaped and at this price then I'm afraid it's simply not possible at this point in time. No ISP does that. In fact no ISP offers what we do in any case at these prices. No throttling, no deprioritising of all services, no streaming shaping, browsing and gaming shaping, and all day every day. Downloads? Well, they're shaped after 100s of gigs in most cases (some customers got bonus data this month as a thank you) and then we apply the shaping to large download protocols.

you may be shaped to only 25% of your line speed, I am really not sure though...better to ask the CW rep...

downloading via ftp @ 35kb/s. Business uncapped 2mbps with no shaping whatsoever, green all around.

this is one ISP I hoped didn't **** around anymore. looks like I was wrong. Cancelling and moving on. #votewithyourwallet

I've had both accounts for a while, I run a permanent ping plotter to monitor.

When I got to my PC graph was flat-lining at 300ms on the 2nd hop (1st hop is also external, i.e. not router - ping on that was fine). So I tried my Axxess, Afrihost and Plugg accounts, all fine, so tried WA free 1GB also fine - weird.
So tried WA 15GB Capped account again and 300ms on 2nd hop.

Just used 1GB account yesterday, 15GB has returned to normal now.
