Web Africa ADSL general feedback

I tried the trial account last night while a Fri host was messed up. Was very impressed. I'm currently on business uncapped and looking to change. Would you guys recommend the wa uncapped accounts?

How much data are you looking to consume monthly? The trial account is a Home capped service which is extremely good at the moment and the Business uncapped accounts will perform the same if in the 'Green' unaffected zone.

Hi,

Coming from Afrihost, I'd like to know whether I can have a home uncapped account with them (499R) and still have my line hosted with Afrihost, or do I have to move my line to them?

Reason is that I would like to test it for a month before making my final move.

Thanks

Hi Smokey_sa,

You can definitely have your line with another ISP and use our data services.

How much data are you looking to consume monthly?

Can anybody shed some light on what the thresholds for 2Mb home uncapped and businesses uncapped are? :)

We unfortunately have no set thresholds as the ratings, throttling and shaping on uncapped is dependent on the current network load as well as your current usage over the past 10 days.

I'm also thinking of changing to WebAfrica.

Should I rather get 2mb business account or 4mb home account?

Do not really download alot (p2p) but steam (when buying/dowloading games) and updates is done during the day. Would it be influenced if I only take a home account or is p2p more the thing thats being "shaped".
Thanks for any feedback.
Regards.

I would recommend a Business uncapped account or Home capped if you looking to download things during the day and for gaming. Less shaping than the home uncapped accounts. You can test out our free 2gb account (Home capped) and see how things perform.

Having a bizarre problem with Gmail. At random times of day speeds to Gmail slow down to a completely unusable state. It is only Gmail, as all other sites are still fine. Ping mail.google.com at these times is sub 30ms, and traceroutes are completely normal. Closing and reopening in another tab does nothing. This only happens on WA, as if I switch back to an Axxess capped account, speed is normal. This is especially weird as the mirrors are local, as evidenced by the latency and the traceroutes. Is there a problem with local peering? Is the SSL connection to Gmail being shaped for some reason? Anyone else have this problem, and did you find a solution?

Sounds a lot like the same issue, except I'm not using a VPN, and I'm using WA's assigned DNS server. Seems to be all google services now, not just gmail. Very frustrating - everything else with the account is perfect.

Live help is really impressive. "Ricardo Tango" asked me for my customer code after 5 mins of silence, and hasn't said a damn word for going on 25 mins now since then.

Sorry about the live chat issue. I have sent it our ADSL manager to take up with Ricardo.

Can you PM me your account details and I am going to take this issue up with our network team.

One last question. Is there some kind of system in place that one can check out that will let you know if you need to slow down?

Yes, we have a DSL console whereby you can check where you are currently sitting on if your affected by throttling. We have a Business uncapped KB article which will shed some light on how the service works :)

Hi DarkSpectre,

I can understand you frustrated with the speed you getting but there is no need to resort to offensive language especially considering that you have not reported the latest issue to our ADSL team so they can investigate. The last time you had issues was more than a month ago and after checking your DSL console, which shows that you are not being affected by throttling (Green Zone), the only shaping you will notice is on P2P/NNTP during the day but again not much as its a Business account. So the issue is definitely somewhere else and our team has also confirmed the current issue is only affecting Home Uncapped accounts.

How does your line stats look and have you done a trace route to see if you not being affected by an exchange issue? Our support team are available to assist at all times but we need issues like this reported to us with all the necessary test results so we can escalate your issue and get it fixed. If you would like me to assist and get this matter investigated please PM me the test results so I may escalate it.

Sorry, this issue has been driving me crazy :(

Last night (After 12AM) a huge torrent file ("Linux Distro") was successfully downloaded onto my PC without issues. The average torrent speed was around 200Kb/s.

Youtube's been terribly slow 24/7 since last week

EDIT: I've submitted a ticket (#2181145). Please fix it asap :( It's ruining my life.

Gmail dog slow again. No increased latency this time, just slow as all hell.

Router is reporting 196.220.59.188 and 196.220.59.189.

I've also overridden my local connection to google's DNS servers with no difference.

Both return 74.125.233.101 for mail.google.com, which AFAIK is correct.

Interestingly, I've just hardcoded a result from a server I work on in Germany which resolved mail.google.com to 173.194.112.54 in my /etc/hosts, and Gmail is the fastest I've ever seen it. Perhaps our local Google servers are under load during these times, or the link from CPT to JHB is still saturated.

Weirdly, it's just the normal google services, like mail, search, etc. Youtube is and has always been ridiculously fast on WA. I can stream at 1080p instantly.

Is there some bizarre shaping rule which activates on SSL encrypted connections after a certain length of time? I've noticed my SSH sessions get progressively slower, almost as if they're being shaped, until latency and throughput become so bad it's unusable. If I quit the SSH session and immediately open a new one to the same server, it's instantly fine again. I wonder if accessing Gmail/Google services on HTTPS is subject to similar rules. Never experienced anything like it on another ISP.

So at the beginning of this month, I upgraded to a 10mbps line with Webafrica. Telkom messed up the order, performed maintenance and long story short, my line was only upgraded on the 19th.

WebAfrica bothered Telkom every single day to make sure that they were working on fixing the issue. Once fixed, my account was credited with the amount that was owed to me, and I was give 5 free non-expiring, anytime gigabytes as a sign of good faith.

It wasn't even their fault!

Thank you very much WebAfrica and especially John-Paul for the great customer service. :)

Wow.

See, now this is good service.

John-Paul also helped me yesterday, great support guy

any update on the uncap problems?

@webafrica Helper

EDIT:
ask support
"what will be better

10mb business
or
20 mb home

for streaming
running on a 10mb line?

the extra available bandwidth or the extra priority
both make can work in my mind, business have better overall quality etc,but with the home option i need only half the bandwidth that leaves me whit lots of headroom for shaping etc

so want to have advice from the exspets
as both cost R999,it dont matter

or should i just get 10mb home for after hour streaming"

and got told this

"Good Evening

Thanks for your email.

That would be two entire different packages with the business you will get the higher priority and with the home you will get the faster speed as it will run at 20Mbps.

Please see the below link might shed some light:
http://support.webafrica.co.za/inde...rticle/View/669/0/bandwidth-priority-profiles

Please let us know if you would require any further assistance."

but dont say what will be better on the same line speed
what will u guys say?

I would have preferred to open a ticket on WebAfrica but everytime I click on Submit, I get redirected to the login page so here goes:

Dear WebAfrica Support

The past few weeks have been incredibly slow just browsing on my Capped Account. Thinking that things will be faster after work hours ends up being a disappointment often. Rebooting the router shows some improvement sometimes but it takes about 15 minutes just to authenticate.

Furthermore, I no longer seem to be able to sync my line at 6Mbps (I used to months ago) despite Telkom lying to me and saying I'm good for 10.

Please investigate as it is impossible to get any work done during the day as a result and I would prefer not to be the loser who has to go into the office on days when I can work from home.

Thank you.

Hi everyone. Just converted my free account to a 60 + 120gb package. Moving from afrihost. Just wanted to find out how the WA network is performing.
