Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Just trying out the Web Africa free 2Gig account and it seems as though International stream speeds are the same as my AH business. They both slow as hell when viewing in 720p on Youtube and medium quality buffers on Twitch. I'm on a 4meg line.

I'm off to Afrihost capped, colleague of mine says he gets full speed all the time, and you don't have to do this split "after hours".

Lol, ask DrJohnZoidberg about that.

You called? :D

Afrihost capped doesn't work for me and I wouldn't recommend that anyone in Cape Town with a line faster than 10Mbps move to them without doing thorough testing with the free account beforehand.

It's easy to test. Sign up for a 1GB free account, and then test it at different times of the day. If it works then hurray for you, I've just had extremely poor performance with it for at least the past 4 - 5 months. Daytime speeds usually good then at night it's really bad.

Check the AH Capped thread for feedback I've given http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/473778-Afrihost-CAPPED-ADSL-Feedback-(MTN)

Hi
Im on a 10Mb Business Uncapped account which has performed flawlessly up to now.
Line speeds are good when I test them.
Currently on 280 Gb for the month and 3 stars.
The line is just so badly shaped atm its impossible to download anything even during download plus hours and the streaming is very erratic.
If I moved to a capped line - would you guys stop doing this?

You only feel the stars shaping during office hours, so I highly doubt that it's shaping and more likely a line/exchange problem.

Always test with another ISP account that's on a different backbone before you blame the ISP.

I have tested with AH - download at full line speed
There have been others also having issues with shaping/throttling after hours

+1 I sent them traceroute results, timeouts on some of their vlan hops. After hours very slow. Tested with Telkom guest account - no issues. I just get the same 3 star nonsense reply. They used to be good.. looks like they are going down the same round as AH.

Interesting. What area are you in?

I would suggest signing up for the free 2GB account to test. It should work similarly to the Business uncapped on 5 stars.

Home Capped Pro will give you an even higher network priority...

WA bandwidth priority profiles

If gopes is having to get higher network priority at 5 o' clock in the morning, then there are other issues, or signs of critical mass (I would have expected more complaints from other IS reseller threads) on the IPC, which IPC's is what I'd like to know.

One should expect full speed after 5pm mon-fri and weekends on silver profile and not have to upgrade profiles to get what you used to get, then, what's stopping it from happening again and upgrading again?

Good question. For which I have no answer.

Instead of upgrading I'm distributing my use across two capped products: home capped from WA and capped from AH. When throughput speed drops on WA I switch to AH, and when latency/packet loss on AH gets ragged I switch to WA. Etc.

From WA bandwidth priority profiles...

How does prioritised traffic compare to unshaped traffic?

With unshaped, all traffic types are treated the same. While this may sound attractive, in truth there is no intelligent traffic management, thus it is likely that protocols such as P2P and other download traffic could choke the network, since no provider sells adsl on a 1:1 contention ratio, this could slow down time critical applications (games, VoIP VPN and streaming) and interactive applications (Web-browsing and email).

By using traffic prioritisation we can ensure that critical applications have a higher priority and will be fully operational regardless of the load on the network. In addition, by effectively utilising traffic priority management we also reduce the chance of the network becoming congested in the first place.

ISP fine print and terminology are minefields but the above does not stipulate time-of-day. Full speed would be managed, even after 5pm on weekdays and on weekends.

YMMV

Thinking of canceling my AH business uncapped to go to Web Africa business uncapped. What would be the best time to do so?

Also, can someone from web africa please post their local and International speed test results?

Right now. 25th is their cutoff date, plus you'll only pay pro-rata at Web Africa. They also have a special on where you pay R1 for the first month (I think it's for Home Uncapped only, not sure)

Their home uncapped is just as good as business IMO

I was just going on my personal experience with IS (Plugg and Connection), WA should be the same as the others that use the star rating, maybe WA is slightly different as they have priorities as well as stars, where the Plugg and Connection are just stars?

I'm no authority. And I've never used an uncapped product on the IS backbone. But my understanding is that stars take usage and network capacity into consideration whereas bandwidth profiles assign capacity amongst the different traffic protocols. (Our much appreciated company rep, Web Africa Helper, would be the authority here.)

Interestingly the only WA product with a Platinum bandwidth profile, the very highest, is Business Capped Pro...

I'm not too sure what issues and stuff people are experiencing, but I've just switched from another ISP (Axxess) to Webafrica. I'm a pretty big gamer, and game mostly on the North American servers, which yes the latency is higher, but eh. Lately, all routes to NA on axxess have become bogged down or slow with massive packet loss. I sent a ticket, to which they said it was my line blah blah. Well, I decided to switch to WA uncapped. 2Mbps connection as I wanted to test and I'm really impressed! Lowest Latency I've had to any North American based game! And I see that they have a steam server hosted as well, which I am downloading from ATM. Haven't gotten anything less than 240Kpbs (4mb ADSL line)

Latency I used to have: 313Avg, 330 when Network was busy, 310 when quiet
Latency I get now: 290Avg, 310 During Busy times. 310 Max so far

Also line jitter and packet loss are virtually nothing, so its really really good!

I see no reason at all to go for home capped pro.
