Web Africa's new ADSL pricing revealed

Hmm I for one are one of those "suckers" who try to find a balance between what I perceive to be a reliable ISP, and good pricing. For this reason I am not an Afrihost client, simply because I cannot afford to have my business hang with no internet for a day or two, on the off chance that the ISP can't handle the goods. In no way am I inferring that Afrihost can't, but in my book they have not proven themselves to take the chance. That is my opinion and yes, I am willing to pay a bit more for the piece of mind. As they say: "once bitten, twice as shy". This piece of mind I get from ISPs like WebAfrica and Axxess, even though they cost a bit more than others.

I am just as disappointed as everyone else, but I guess they have to do what they have to do in order to cover short, mid, and long term goals. For me, Axxess has the better pre-paid local for topping up, and OpenWeb the best value on their 30GB local accounts. I hope WA can match or better it in future, but for now, I wish them luck on their journey.

I suggest moving to Afrihost and getting a backup account with IS if you want redundancy. You aren't a sucker for wanting balance, but balance isn't forking out for WA's bandwidth.

That's a pretty poor effort. I hope the people who were "loyal" to WA and waiting for price cuts jump ship.
I sure will be jumping ship WA very disappointing dis isn't what I would of expected from them.

It is not all of a sudden, you must have been in the same coma wamatt have been in for the past 6-8 months or customers getting sub-par support on trivial issues, especially the resellers who have to wait countless WEEKS before any kind of progress is made on their issues, the countless hardware failures experienced in the last 3 months and not to mention uncompetitive pricing seeing most of my clients AND (I can only imagine) the resellers clients rather using a cheaper service with better support.

This is not at all "all of a sudden" but since March last year at the very least. They're biting the hand that fed them, trying to sucker users that do not have a clue into their "web". I'm sorry, but it is us, the tech-savvy guys, who recommend to others who ASK us for our (valued) opinion, if they should go with such an offering or not. Sure. Some folk would slip through and fall for their (paid for through the nose) advertising without beating an eyelash, but if I am living in some sort of parallel dimension, the economy has taught us to be a bit more careful in where we spend out money. And I'd advise anyone where the cheapest options are for them... and yes... even recommend TELKOM as their ISP.

Do yourself a favor, work through all the users who replied to this thread saying they're cancelling their accounts, and count those who mentioned how much gb packages they're using and how much they spend in a month. Take that and then check how much Web Africa has lost just for today. I'm estimating at least R20k in revenue each month, only time will tell what ripple effects this lame excuse will have in the long run. And like i said, they'll have so much spare capacity after all these users (and their word of mouth advertising) leaves them, that the only resort they will have is to "run a special" or give bandwidth away for free.

Remember, they're not restricted to Telkom's per gb model anymore, so they're buying per mbps now... after almost 6 months of testing their network, you would've thought that they'd have a clear enough understanding of how much bandwidth they are using, and according to several posts by their staff "not nearly capacity". Now given the fact wamatt mentioned something about systems being changed and so forth, and having personally dealt with the incompetency of their programmers, I would wager a guess that some sort of system feature isn't in place yet, riddled with bugs, and slowing things down dramatically. Either that, or they ARE full of **** when it comes to pricing and totally clueless when it comes to being an ISP in this day and age where R30/gb appears the norm.

Dude, you are too driven by emotion to have a rational perspective on this. I am 100% impartial, I don't even live in the country. You are all making mountains out of mole hills. I can respect what you have to say, I can agree with some points you make but you are just far too emotional man. You need to chill out a bit and in the wise words of Van "don't take life too seriously, you will never get out alive".

Well WA was my first ISP I used for ADSL, but then better offers came along as I mentioned, so although I still have pre-paid accounts with WA, I have had to make use of others to get to my happy middle road :)

Web Africa ...

I have been a WA customer for 4 years, until this morning.

I complained last year that I needed 15GB. To do this I had to buy 10GB at R490 + 5GB Prepaid at R70, which came to R840. I could not understand why there was no 15GB account, as the 20GB account also worked out at R49/GB.

I received a response, which promised the new pricing (for January actually)
Here is part of the response ...
"Once these test are completed and we are happy with the results will we redo our entry level pricing matrix and who knows this could even be cheaper than R 49 per Gb."
Entry level pricing matrix, I assume 1GB prepaid is R69. 1GB Shaped is R59, so no where near expectations from last year.

Then Afrihost came along, and I took a whole 10GB from them for R290, double the bandwidth at R60 less, so WA for half the month, and Afrihost for the other half for the last 5 months.

Well if I stayed with WA with the new pricing, the 15GB would have been R770. A saving of 8%, and still no 15GB account.

OR I can get 15GB from Afrihost at R435. OR 20GB for R580.

WA basically had my extended loyalty for the last 5 months, and I feel I got hit in the gut. When I saw the special last week for myBB users, I thought what a cheek ... loyal subscribers nothing, but a special for the masses. But I thought the price reductions come Monday must surely be something to behold. I was not expecting R29/GB, but I was expecting a lot more than what you provided.

You have actually done yourselves a disservice today and last week with the special. You would have been much better off if you kept your prices high, and those of us in the know would have just gone quietly into the night.
And those mom and pops ... they still take a recommendation from a friend or family member in the know.

And like many of the crowd here ... I do not need any of the extras you are offering, and I can not justify paying you an extra R4020 per annum for the same service I can get elsewhere.
AOL's model of added content is from 20 years ago, and I have no idea why you are following it.

International costs come down. And yes absolutely so do ours since we buy international capacity. The reality again we must separate from the hype.

Do you not remember pre-seacom when everyone said prices would drop 80%. Well guess what folks. It didn't.

wamatt based on your attitude most people will stay away from web africa. And come to think of it I wanted to apply for a job there.

Pricing FAIL!

Woohoo - prepaid is now R1.00 cheaper per Gigabyte. Why did they bother?

I'm reconsidering my position as a loyal WebAfrica customer. They have missed the boat completely with these prices.

I'm one of the many who suffered at R 70.00 per Gigabyte out of loyalty, waiting for the new prices to be announced. Now that the new prices are out and I can see how little has changed, I see no reason to stick around any longer.

Thank goodness I jumped the WA ship last year.

Was also a loyal supporter since they started.

I have not moved any of our clients to Afrihost yet...

WA is a couple rungs lower than Telkom and Mweb for me at the moment.

First you guys offer a special to loyal MyBB members. I piss my pants with excitement only to find out that I'm not 'loyal' enough. Forget my nearly 4000 posts and logging in on a daily basis for the last four months. That was a low blow. In the world of forums I likened myself to a person of colour during apartheid- not good enough for the good stuff.

Now today, after months of building anticipation you release this ****? Do people like me mean anything to your company???? Why don't you come clean and admit you are now a tier one provider. Hosting and reselling is your business now, much like Telkom. The difference is Telkom is honest.

They say there is no loyalty in the ISP industry. Well, after today, no matter how low your prices drop I will never use you again.

Then Mweb must be a lamborghini : You pay a lot of money and everyone besides you think you're a twat :)

Why cant all the prices come down?, what about the loyal cusomers you have on other packages. i been buying my account for almost 2 years now. at the same price. I dont know what support WA always tries to fall back on, because i hav'nt had a problem with any support places, although telkom takes an hour to answer, they too got around to trying to fix my problem, so if telkom has support after the hour you wait on the phone, whats the difference?

i hardly care about support cause what else can go wrong really, besides mainly a mistyped error somewhere,

i just want my internet at a price that compares with the rest of the world, simple

hell i dont even actually care about international bandwidth, local is fine.

Nobody even wants to give their own country a nice deal amongs only the people in it.

That doesn't make you loyal.. especially not if any of those posts (if not 90%) were in TK... were they?

This 30gb promo is really just to buy some satisfied mybb customers.I mean, why else would you give some loyal mybb users such a super special but settle for R1 discounts for you loyal support base.

It would have made more sense if they gaive that special to 100 WA customers that's also 1 year old mybb users with 20+ posts.Somehow i don't see how you value mybb users more than your own(no hard feelings to anyone). If you can afford to sell 100 30gb accounts for R200,gave away thousands of gigs to test users but still unable to even match the Afrihosts out there, there is something wrong with you.
