Web Africa's new ADSL pricing revealed

All companies are not alike, spar is different to pick n pay who is different to woolworths. Each has their own stategy and niche market.

To customers looking for a complete option, we are there company, for people like yourself who are only interested in large amounts of data we will not look as appealing.

u just lost another few customers with that kind of attitude...

I think you guys (WA) are making the same mistake again with the July Price change.. you gonna hype it up and you gonna get the same response as you got now....

I recommend you wanna decrease prices in July.. publish the rate now.... you will very soon get an idea if the decrease is a good idea or if you should just jeep you price constant

I think it should have read that we are becoming independent of the price per gig model, thats how the rest of the world functions. Bring on the R0.00 per Gig revolution.
I wish it was, though even in many places in the UK and Europe there are cap restrictions. Granted they are higher than ours, but almost all of them have lines in their contract that state that if people "abuse" the network, restrictions will be imposed. R0.00 per gig might be a nice dream, but I don't see it happening soon. I don't mind paying for good service. Its the fact that I cant understand this new business model.

Which seems to be all about, long term profits based on annual contracts of the complete packages, instead of the pre-paid sections. If this really is the case, then as mentioned, Then WA really is no longer what I need as a client. Which is how I understood WA's Marketing Managers statement to be

@waroop

you guys have had your head in the sand since last Sept, promising a price adjustment since then. and now we see your much anticipated adjustment and it's a joke. you have missed the plot here and have failed dismally and are taking flack because you have not listened to the market, instead you have done your own thing. The majority of your users don't want the steam server or the freezone, and if your pricing is higher to include that, then its hardly free is it! You have damaged your brand over the last 2 years with falling support levels, over bloated pricing, unethical billing and empty promises. You guys talk about loyal customers, yet you have failed to be loyal to your customers, like myself, who have been warning you off this path for almost a year now. The fact that this has been one of the busiest threads on MyBB is testament to your failing brand. You defend your position with arrogance and attitude towards the people who grew your business to where it is today, and that is the tech-savvy communities like MyBB. We have not misread or misunderstood your posts, we understand your position loud and clear. Your Richard Smuts told me, in a phone conversation some months back, that you don't want customers like me, you'd rather we leave WA, loud and clear.

I am sorry but although i feel bad for the people who are in this, my frustration gets the better of me.

What frustrated me the most, is you Mathew Tagg someone in the position you have as CEO, founder or what ever it is, and all who is in high management needs to have a minimum education of nothing less than degree's and diploma's and who knows how many years of experience as a requirement to be in that kind of position in any company. And to know that with all that kind of education this is the kind of desitions you all come up with, i dont believe it makes anyone smarter in how to run a good company. Cause look at what happend yesterday.

What all that education teaches you is how to make as much profit you can at what ever cost it comes with. no matter who likes it or not. The only reason why someone recieves these kind of awards are for making the company grow with profit. It is easly obtained when nobody can do anything about the prices you guys all set for south africa. It does not matter how that profit was made as long as it was made. I dont believe it teaches you how to run an effective business it might explain the market and admin accounting stuff, but it can never teach you how to think all the time.
Clearly yesterday proves that. Its the greed that when you try to squeeze out to much, it pops.

For years this whole business with internet has ripped everyone off with high prices. Not only webafrica but all of them. You guys call it stratagy to lower prices slowly over the months just to stretch it as long as you can, And this is what you get an award for.

+1
Best suggestion yet on this thread.
@wamatt & friends: I dare you to do this.

Hi Kalvaer,

Thanks for the post and valuable feedback. This statement by Krayon may have been misinterpreted. The MyBB community is most definitely very important to us. If it were not why would we employ every effort to ensure all queries were answered today, or launch specials like our 30GB @ R199? I think what he was trying to illustrate was that the new pricing was not geared specifically towards power users (as seen by the MyBB response thus far :O) who have a very particular type of demand - cost p/GB.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we are definitely committed to MyBB and will continue to be so :)
Hi Waroop,

This doesn't really fill us with confidence, even though you state that WA is committed to this community. Your own CEO has admitted that there are staff members who said to forget about MyBB.

I'm still waiting for a response to that post btw :) The issue is not so much "forget about MyBB", but that somebody employed by a supposedly customer-centric company has the audacity to suggest that a group of clients may be ignored.

I am not impressed by WA's response to a user's query on their own forum :

R3330 thats just insane.

Someone tell me I worked this out wrong."

VexBlade,

To correct your calculations:

Web Africa new pricing:
R290 for 6GB+ADSL line x 12 months = R3480 for a total of 72GB’s

Afrihost’s current R29 Special (not standard pricing):
R29x5 = R145 + R152 ADSL line rental = R292 x 12 months = R3504 for a total of 60GB’s

In summary, if you are on the right package for yourself, you could be getting 12 extra GB’s per year for R24 cheaper.

But wait! It get rebutted with the following :

Funny how you dont include the ADSL Line rental in Web Africa price. so from the top.

Web Africa new pricing:
R290 for 6GB+ R152 line x 12 months = R5304 for a total of 72GB’s

Afrihost’s current R29 Special (not standard pricing but if you order now its locked in FOREVER):
R29x5 = R145 + R152 ADSL line rental = R292 x 12 months = R3504 for a total of 60GB’s

And just so everyone knows Afrihost is currently running at R14.5 per GB with the buy 1 get 1 free special so you will save even more.

Oh and WAKy you dont by any chance work in the marketing department do you ?

I find it hilarious how they say their target market is now the mom's and pop's.

So, i mean, correct me if im wrong...

WA sees them as less tech savvy, yea? So they're actually admitting that they're exploiting this to make more money. first off, wtf. secondly, almost every mom and pop has a tech savvy child lately. Is WA really really realllly that retarded?

Wow....missed alot not reading this thread last night :p

And the majority of south africans will always go for the cheaper option. And dont play the "support" route. afrihost has exactly the same support. I sent through 5 emails yesterday to support and got replies to all within an hour of sending them...i had to wait 2 days for WA tickets. And yes yes, i know you have more clients, but you also have more ppl working for you.

I mean, WA really really doesnt have any advantage what so ever over afrihost or telkom isp...they no longer have any cards to play and using them atm just means you dont want to go through the effort of moving isp's.

WA does not have a foot to stand on.

I think you're getting a bit too personal now, really not necessary.

I wish we could see how many subscribers WA has gained and lost over the last day... Interesting to see if people are actually falling for this or not. But I'm guessing they losing more than they are gaining.

Looks like they try to trick the mom and pops into believing that Afrihost is more expensive because of the evil line rental, yet WA is cheaper without it... errr. ok.

Yes but it's quite funny how the calculations done by Kyron is completely incorrect and he quotes a package that doesn't include line rental, yet conveniently doesn't add line rental.

Web Africa new pricing:
R290 for 6GB+ADSL line x 12 months = R3480 for a total of 72GB’s

Afrihost’s current R29 Special (not standard pricing):

Should be:

Web Africa new pricing:
R290 for 6GB+ R152 ADSL line x 12 months = R5304 for a total of 72GB’s

Afrihost’s current R29 Special (not standard pricing):
R29x10 = R290 + R152 ADSL line rental = R292 x 12 months = R5304 for a total of 120GB’s

It's funny how the marketting manager can't even do simple maths!

aah, yes, lets all get ripped off and pay exorbitant prices from everyone and reward them for it. And be drained for as much as we can for all these years and be unsulted with the small price drop every year while some have not even been dropped i am on a package that price was'nt droped?,, why not? cause everyone is forced to pay for it, so why should they, thats what they think i am sure.. And then pat those people on the back saying good job. wich will leave us with affordable internet in 20 years time.

Good job WA, WELL DONE!!!.. oh please what ever

Should be:

That's why I asked if WA get these people with bought degrees... like, I HELPED a marketing friend of mine study for his exam and I learned more about this **** than what they have employed here...

It seems that no matter what, or how WA answers any of the questions here, the answers will simply not be accepted. So why should they even bother to answer any?
IMHO frustration and anger should be aimed towards the likes of DoC, Gov, Telkom, ICASA, NeoTel and Infraco for failing the SA public and forcing ISPs to compete with gadgets and "innovative" packages.

I am also very disappointed in WA for failing to meet with my expectations. However, even so they still beat others on pricing, which will be a small saving for me should I decide to go with WA again. Yes I can get better deals elsewhere, but for my own piece of mind, I choose not to do so. For other needs (entertainment) I can't use WA's SAIX pre-paid local accounts, because it is way too expensive. So I choose other providers.

To each his own, and all that.;)

Just a thought: if they are indeed aiming their products at the ignorant or 'mom & pop' then these people are unlikely to switch to WA, using their own logic. Therefore they will not gain any new customers and only end up losing those that know better? Sounds like a poor strategy to me, sure they know better... Although it does not appear so at the moment :p
