Web hosting price shake up

Still 6 gigs local. No sign of 50 gigs.

* Unlimited Traffic: This hosting package includes unlimited traffic transfer. However, we reserve the right to move a website between web servers and internet backbones, both within South Africa and internationally. Your website will have 6 GB (6000 MB) of local South African traffic transfer available per month. If you move more than 6GB per month you have a 2 choices: 1) Move your site to an international server at no extra charge and no change to your monthly cost; 2) Continue hosting your website in South Africa for which there will be a charge of R0.09 per MB over the 6GB traffic moved per month.

When someone says that 5GB to 50GB is a 1000% increase I shop somewhere else. It is, of course, a 900% increase.

hehe they did it like 50/5 x 100/1 = 1k instead of using the increased amount of 45(excluding the exisitng 5)

I have a hosting plan with Afrihost. But the packages on their website haven't changed. Nor has the bandwidth allowance in my control panel. Is there a time schedule to the new plans?

But I'm mighty pleased things are heading the right direction here. I've been developing a complex, data intensive, web application which I'm hoping to launch early next year and if it is a successful venture I dread the idea of being forced to host offshore and thus introduce unwanted latency for local users.

Local is lekker, we just want the lekker prices too.

cybersmart has the best shared hosting prices. Especially if you are a cybersmart customer!

but I hope u don't need any support with them, as they take almost 24 hours to respond to any emails...

no I don't use them I use elitehost.co.za just saying that their prices are so afordable and if you have a cybersmart account its even more bandwidth/storage for your buck.

I doubt some one would really need support when they get going. So support for me is just not that important just as long as I get a answer.

But if you are running any type of business with real, live customers, or sending and receiving email, or generally requiring that your site is up and running you want resolution to problems within minutes rather hours or days.

I recently moved all my web sites to Germany. Could not afford to wait any longer for lower local hosting prices.

One day I'll perhaps move them all back.

Still not good enough. Unlike broadband, we do have options available for hosting. Its still significantly cheaper to host overseas.

Why pay R45 per GB in SA when you can get the same damn thing for around US$2 per GB?

People who host locally must either be very rich or very retarded.

Not really. I did a side by side speed comparison last week with an SA server vs a UK server. I used a databasing php program to test, and let me tell you, the South African hosted site responded at double the speed to any click.
FTP is around 10X quicker on SA servers.
So yes, there is a major speed difference, so for someone who actually needs to run CMS/Mysql/latency intensive sites/use FTP often, then the premium for local hosting is for sure worth it!

Bah humbug !

I will never host here! Ixwebhosting in the USA is the BEST!

here is a snippet of what I get for around R50 a month!
These stats are what I am currently using....taken from my CP panel

Total traffic Traffic Details Used this month
44.2 GB/99999.0 GB Click to change traffic limit
Disk quota
3701/1999999 MB Click to change quota
Standard Domains used 9 of unlimited - 3 dedicated IP and 6 shared IP
Subdomains used 3 of unlimited
Mailboxes used 38 of 9,999
Auto responders used 3 of 9,999
MySQL Database used 49 of 999
PgSQL Database used 0 of 999

PLUS..you get google, yahoo and other advertising credits...big bonus!
PLUS...the best support team around
PLUS...load any software you want!!
PLUS...1 click applications available
PLUS...excellent speeds!!!

Now you tell me who in SA can beat this?

As for Hetzner...why don't they offer their dedicated servers at the same price as they do in Germany? (I have one) hmmmm because some of us will just pay these prices willy nilly! Not ME!
