As for Hetzner...why don't they offer their dedicated servers at the same price as they do in Germany? (I have one) hmmmm because some of us will just pay these prices willy nilly! Not ME!

Still not good enough. Unlike broadband, we do have options available for hosting. Its still significantly cheaper to host overseas.

It costs you less to host overseas, but it then costs me more to access your site from SA.
This is fine as long as your content, or whatever you are serving is not specifically intended for the local market, but could be a problem for local folks using local-only...

Using ADSL traffic splitting, several thousand at least. And towards the end of a month, probably tens of thousands.

I have a hosting plan with Afrihost. But the packages on their website haven't changed. Nor has the bandwidth allowance in my control panel. Is there a time schedule to the new plans?

But I'm mighty pleased things are heading the right direction here. I've been developing a complex, data intensive, web application which I'm hoping to launch early next year and if it is a successful venture I dread the idea of being forced to host offshore and thus introduce unwanted latency for local users.

Local is lekker, we just want the lekker prices too.

Wouldn't normally quote my own post but I decided to prod Afrihost and their response blew me away. I now have 15 times more bandwidth and 5 times greater hosting space on my local plan! It's like someone just switched on the light.

Knowing the people at Afrihost they are probably reselling US bandwidth and calling it SA. Useless company who can't even renew your domain name on time. Three times they pulled my plug without notifying me that my domain name had expired.

Better speed in SA? So what? It's not worth paying 2000% more for...

Typical overseas hoting is around $3-$5 (R24-R40). I get my local hosting from cybersmart for R69 per month. Hardly a 2000x difference. For R29, ill pay for the extra speed per month. And I get 1gb space and 6gb transfer which is more than enough...

I sent in a ticket, mentioned the MyBB article, asked why the changes don't reflect on my control panel. I'm on Linux Gold. I got a reply to say my package features have been reset. My monthly bandwidth allowance went from 3gb to 50gb. Disk space from 500mb to 3gb. A lot of the other metrics like MySQL dbs, email accounts etc also went up.

Unless they've made a horrible mistake which they will correct when they read this, it makes me think that the restraint for web apps on this package going forward will be processing capacity rather than bandwidth.

Maybe I can host a local proxy.... kidding.

My main site chews over 200GB's of bandwidth every month. If I was hosting it in SA it would cost me 10,000% more than what I am paying for it now.

It's an international site.

lol, well in that case, i agree that it actually would cost you 10,000% more to host in SA...

i guess it just depends on your usage requirements... lower usages have less of a price gap...

There is no doubt that it is considerably higher to host in South Africa compared to the U.S.A and the UK. However there are some great web hosting deals based right here at home - You just need to keep your eyes open

I have not come across any webhost in SA that can offer me what I get from IXwebhosting in USA!
If you have a site dedicated to SA usage only then yes you may have a few hits a day and the speed will suffice hosting loaclly. If you need international visitors, SA just cant cope!

There are a lot of SA based hosts that have servers based through out the U.S and other parts of the World. To be honest I noticed some over priced web hosts here. I just think that if you find a good honest South African based web host that meets your requirements then you will not have such a negative out look on hosting your site(s) here at home.

As you can see I strongly believe there is a better hosting market here in SA!

Rubbish. There is no good reason at all to host any website in South Africa. Its just plain stupid to pay more to get less.

I just bought a managed, dedicated server in the USA for $157 a month. I get 1.5TB bandwidth per month and a 250GB HDD. Look into dedicated servers in SA and see what you get in comparison.
