Any changes we have made on networks that have joined GWI are only for the better of the users as a whole.
Networks that we did change were typically completely bridged networks (baaaad practice) to a PPPoE type network, as well as upgrading the hardware to systems that will do this.
Linksys should not have a problem connecting to our towers, which use Atheros or Prism based chipsets - there may be something else wrong.
Your connection dropping is definitely a clear indication taht there is a fault present. Have you called support regarding your issues?
