Web Intact (Or intactless service)

bboy - what area are you in?

Any changes we have made on networks that have joined GWI are only for the better of the users as a whole.

Networks that we did change were typically completely bridged networks (baaaad practice) to a PPPoE type network, as well as upgrading the hardware to systems that will do this.

Linksys should not have a problem connecting to our towers, which use Atheros or Prism based chipsets - there may be something else wrong.

Your connection dropping is definitely a clear indication taht there is a fault present. Have you called support regarding your issues?

Ok.. lets start.

I live in scottsville, very close to 50 durban road, 700 meters line of sight.

I can see TBC22 as my strongest signal, that the old tower i used in bridge mode, worked the best!
My new tower is gwi-neds1....
Not as great signal, but i CAN actually connect to it with a USB stick beleive it or not, but it does die all the time.

Now what i need to be happy is to use my wrt54g's.
I have 2 wrt54g's, one running ddwrt , one running alchemy.

I need somebody to actually run a setup with a wrt54g on the gwi ned s1 tower and see what settings need to be set to get it to work.

I can associate with the tower, however the pppoe dial up on the router does not work.

I am using the router in CLIENT mode, PPPoE mode.

I left the router with the GWI guys for 1 week, they gave it back saying it works perfectly in AP mode with channel set to 10.

If its in AP mode then its running on my home network only, that makes no sense, nor does it actually work.

I want a step by step guide on what settings need to be set on these routers, apparently the hostname on the router also needs to be something special but nobody can tell me what.

I'm not in the mood for buying more hardware and will just use the ADSL if things dont go right.

As for the office connection, everything is setup and supplied by GWI.

Grant just left, Climbed up to the roof and picked up 3 different base station and best signal from NORTHCLIFF, hoho......

there are 13 days left in this month and if i cannot get my router to connect , im gonna cancel, i'm also going to cancel the work connection, then i'm going to cancel the install of gwi at another friends house, and then im gonna tell the other other friend to just get dsl

thats 2 current connections and 2 upcoming connections that i just wont have to put up with hassles for

i also would very much like my pulbic ip back, which i was told was part of the package when i bought it

Normally you would leave the hostname blank, as we do not require it to make a PPPoE connection. If you do fill something in (which will most likely cause more hassles as often PEBUK) then you should use 'web-int' but rather leave blank unless your router will not work without it.

You can also set your router to operate in bridge mode, and use the Windows PPPoE connection to trouble shoot you rproblem. If that stays up, then the problem is obviously on your router.

I just checked with the PMB office, and they definitely DO know the service name... Who did you speak to in PMB?

Happy to hear - and just in time too! JHB is just about to change to a bigger, better bandwidth supllier; and we're hard at work linking all surrounding areas to our new provider...

please tell me all the technical details about your radius server/pppoe implementation.

with that knowledge i may be able to diagnose why my wrt dislikes your towers/pppoe methods and maybe install another package on it that can handle it correctly

i have emailed the "help" numerous times.. i have never received a respose, even when i was just inquiring about signing up for the package.

The support cellphone, is rather painfull to hear what the other people are saying, bad reception and they seem to regard pmb as a seperate network.
So i am asking for all the info right here in black and white.

I'd like to take a guess.

You need to run in Client Routed mode on the WLAN.

You're trying to establish the PPPoE over your WAN port, and not the WLAN.
That could be the problem.

If their using WEP, you'll need their WEP key too.

ah daffy the wrt guy!

i was wondering if the "isp settings" used either wan or wlan port, but set up as static it works fine.

i now have the router in "client mode" and have also used it in "client bridge" mode, neither works, i have also tried to have my pc establish the pppoe connection when the router is in either mode, this doesnt work.

i know i do wirelessly connect to the tower as the router tells me the mac address and signal strength of the tower its associated with.

there is plenty signal as my usg 802g stick can connect.

the tower i connect to has no WEP/WPA.
it has no DHCP , infact you never get an ip address from it natively.
you only a pppoe ip address once u "dial in"

We tested a modified Linksys WRT54G on our towers in JHB which are exactly the same as PMB, and all worked fine without a hitch.

You should NOT enter any service name or "ISP details", ONLY your PPPoE account details.

Set the router to 'client mode' and make sure your 'advanced wireless settings' are correct according to which socket you have connected your antenna to.

Make sure you have DHCP turned ON on the router, or enter all the correct GATEWAY & DNS settings on your PC LAN card pointing to your router.

If you don't succeed, you should consult the person who flashed your router for help. There are many forum discussions on this as well - Google for your version and you should find some good info on it.

If their using WEP, you'll need their WEP key too.

We do not use WEP or IP's on the towers, only PPPoE IP's.

If you did not receive an acknowledgement email with a traceable ticket number, then I think you must have mailed the worng 'help'? Which eamil address did you use?

well i myself have been flashing the wrt54 with numerous different software.
i did succeed, rather briefly last night at connecting.

After flashing with alchemy, ddwrt, i went and tried hyperwrt( which is rather useless software) .

it has no client mode or any of the fancy stuff, but somehow somwhere when i clicked the ppoe on my pc it actualy went through, username and password verified, then the traffic died and no matter how many times i tried again it wouldnt go through again. The router was running in the only mode it can in hyper which is AP mode, had the ssid set and channel set to match GWI , but having it setup like this makes no sense, now my poor neighbour when he tries to connect to GWI will end up connecting to my router cause it is overpowering the GWI one.

Anyway trying to get a copy of Satori to try that flash.

I did lend my wrt to the GWI guys for a week so they could have a look at the WRT's and also try fix the problem, it was flashed with ALCHEMY at the time.

I whipped out a wireless pci card and hacked a yagi antenna onto it and that now is giving me a nice strong signal to gwi, so my gwi account is useable.

i am running versions 2.2 wrt's

Which software are you running on your WRT's and have you tested the connection at a distance?

What do you mean?
Please ask specific questions that I can answer here.

Well i am not clued up on the techincal aspect of PPPoE
but any info such as the software your radius server is runnig, any funny kind of auth settings, i really dont know, but may find the info helpfull when i'm trying to setup a pppoe package on the wrt's

Your "Poor" neighbour :D that has your yagi :( I am running with a 30-40% signal from downstairs inside now, no problem, was connected all night - Thanks for the loan.

Let me know when U need it back, GWI dude will not be delivering mine before Thursday or so (with a 4 meter cable so it can go outside)

i'm actually getting 95% signal and 100% quality now
