Web sQuad ISP - Feedback Thread #2

Total outage on Octotel in some Western cape areas: https://www.octotel.co.za/netnotice/
In the process of moving from Octotel to Openserve as OS has just lit their overhead fibre in my area.

Not sure if I am making a mistake, but my old OS ADSL never went down as often Octotel's fibre service has in my area.

My observation has been that Octotel has limited back-haul redundancy.

Openserve is also cheaper for similar speeds.

Up here by me in JHB OS is a rock solid network... Can't go wrong with them.

In our area we’ve had 3 outages in the last 12 months, each 4-8 hours long. Each one was different causes, but the last was due to vandalism, the previous was the seacom failure couple months ago. I’m always looking around for better deals, but currently Websquad and Octotel is keeping me very happy.

Vuma network issues. This morning.
No network. On off the whole time.
Can't pinpoint issue.
Reboot router, fine for now.

Second night. Today at 23:00.
Vuma Springs off again.
Reboot router and Ont. No success.
Don't know if they are doing maintenance.

This is wat Vuma reports. Must be on your side. What is the use in generating a ticket no support after hours.

Working again. Restart Router and ONT.

Took and unplugged connection between router and Laptop.
Working fine again.

As I said, log it so we can investigate or help you troubleshoot. Clearly a local issue if rebooting or unplugging then plugging in works.

On a side note; the vuma status portal is not a to the minute updated list of all outages. Larger outages are manually updated here once confirmed by Vuma NOC - the published outage list is just a fraction of what is published to ISPs as NWIs. Smaller ones generally don’t get published publicly. The ISP hands over to vuma for an entire region (eg a province or larger) at a single point, so an ISP issue would affect an entire region- let’s say the whole of JHB. If it’s just you dropping, it’s FNO or local.

@websquadza

My connection is down as well, seems to be a Vumatel issue.

Are you aware of any planned maintenance?

Edit sorry for screenshots, too lazy to get out of bed…

Definitely fibre down. Area? I’ve scanned through planned NWIs, a few ongoing maintenance tasks in Gauteng from what I see. I’d say log it if it’s not back within the hour so the team can escalate in the morning.

No need to log it- Vuma is on it. According to the NWI, techs should be at the pop anytime before 9am. Hopefully a quick restore.
