Maybe - pings aren't as high, but they are still pretty high comparatively (usually 160 on both). I'll go make coffee and come back and see.

Yup, back to normal. Still seeing a bit of packet loss on the as57976.net host's though.

Looks like it could have been some issues on as57976 (Blizzard) - you were seeing in game latency (usually udp) of +-200ms whereas tcp ping was 160. Usually happens when multipath takes some strain, and UDP packets come in out of order and CPU needs to rebuild frames out of order (hence the additional overhead). Combined with a short bit of reconvergence, may have made it worse. Will keep an eye on this.

Interesting. Out of order packets causes increased latency.

Very interesting! Thanks for the share. So what causes out of order packets though? Congestion?
Nope, equal cost routes, and then the router decides I'll sent one packet this way, and then the other that way.
BGP is "costing" typically at a macro level,ie. either this ISP or that ISP, so you have two routes that way, and then the one ISP has 3 routers to the endpoint and the other has only two, you get the packets just that little bit out off order...

Okay makes sense what is the solution though?

Okay makes sense what is the solution though?

It's all down to how devs code this into games and what make for an "acceptable" amount of induced latency and dropped frames. It's easy for the devs' primary markets - latency is low and retransmits don't really affect gameplay. It's harder for global markets because latency becomes a factor too.

Okay makes sense what is the solution though?
@websquadza answered from a gaming perspective, but from a networking perspective: remember `The Internet` is just a bunch of loosely connected networks, moving some packets between each other. The major design goals (which was achieved) was to have a resilient connection from point A to point B. It was never meant for low latency, nor any guarantees of delivery nor ordering. That is the reasons that UDP and TCP/IP exists for various use cases and why TCP can be quite slow with just a tad of packet drop... though it will recover and continue eventually.

If you really want high performance gaming, the solution is found in having local networks with $$$$$$ switching gear and no more than 100M distance between players (cabling wise - as that is the single hop Ethernet max distance), anything other than that, you'll be making compromises, and will have to "live" with it.

Africa is NOT for sissies ;)

That all said: (I'm not a gamer) but WebSquad had been doing exemplary work to cater for the gaming community and the bang for buck from them, I'd say is still the best available in ZA !

Hi There

I am just curious as to when vuma trenched 100 up, 100 down lines in Weltevreden Park will have their free upgrade to 200/200. I am quite happy with my 100/100, but am also super curious to see what 200/200 is like.

Hi @tracee - these upgrades were completed yesterday. Can you check whether your Router has a 1 Gbps capable WAN port and whether the WAN interface is set to 1 Gbps or 100 Mbps?

Thanks

Can confirm this is often the case,to which WS can attest,I had a 100Mbps cable first time they upgraded me a while ago

It is apparently 1 Gbps and is set to 1 Gbps. I will try rebooting the router later and see if that picks it up

Thanks, let me know if you pick up any issues again

Was quite bad at 1 stage about an hour ago

Couldn't do traces immediately but got around to it eventually. Only really picked up 2 IPs on the port that carried traffic at a time.

This IP is always constant:
