Fair enough, I’m willing to try that. I just need to know which is the best Mikrotik to get. Don’t want some cheapy. Happy to spend more for a better router. Was originally planning to upgrade the Edgerouter to a more powerful one but since there’s an easy way to set up Mikrotik, I’m happy to give it a chance.

I’v actually wanted to try Mikrotik, but as per my pm, I’m not in the IT field and my experience is extremely limited compared to majority of users here so my fear was the steep learning curve which again as per my pm, I just simply don’t have the time for that.

See, I can be very accommodating. And I’m willing to try, and even spend more money. But I also do expect Websquad to resolve should this not work. I simply cannot live like this @websquadza.
More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better. I have an Asus RT-AC88U (nearly 5 times the price) which is only operating in AP Mode now to handle my home WiFi because the little Mikrotik does a much better job than the Asus ever did at running my wired network and fibre traffic. YMMV, but I've personally found Asus routers to be all flashy specs, no performance. Plus I had to reboot it relatively often because the performance would noticeably degrade over time.

I want to replace it for WiFi too but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I meant which Mikrotik should I go for that handles 1gig. Hex? What about the desktop racks?

I mentioned previously, the hEX quite comfortably managed 1gbps before I downgraded to 200mbps, but I don't know what your LAN looks like and it's possible it might not meet your needs. There are definitely beefier Mikrotik devices available, I was merely suggesting the hEX would be a cheap option to test before shelling out for an expensive model.

If you wanted to bite the bullet right away you'd need to chat to someone with more experience with the various Mikrotik options, I personally haven't gone higher than the hEX. (yet)

Ok cool, thanks. Maybe someone else will chime in with suggestions.

The 3011 and 4011 are brilliant all rounders, both rack mountable and a good selection of ports (10 x 1G), but top the scale in terms of price. 2011 or HEX lite won’t cut it. The HEX (RB750GR3) is very well priced and extremely capable up to 1 Gbps, but we've never tested one at 1G, though as @Seeyou mentioned- it works well. I'd be happy to start one up at office on Monday and run some 1G benchmarks. HAP AC^2 is our go to for most applications and does 1G with ease (slightly more processing power under the hood), but you're not using the WiFi, so that extra cost mostly goes to waste - I’m not sure if they have a router with the same horsepower and no WiFi, will check and confirm.

Definitely keen to work with you to resolve this issue of yours and get your streams working well

I was literally checking the 4011 on geewiz. I’m pretty keen on that one.

Thanks, appreciate it. I’m willing to give it a shot, but you’ll need to help me set up the 4011, deal?

We use those by the bucketload on our FTTB, fibre and wireless networks, tested routing and traffic generation up to about 8Gbps without dropping a beat (including a v6 load). Honestly better performance and reliability that most carrier devices from Some of the big names, dual power via a POE input, and a fraction of the price.

So it seems Octotel must have replaced their UPS batteries or something as my internet stayed up just fine last night when loadshedding hit. So hope it stays that way.

Well then looks like I’m about to place the order. If you really want to be a darling, I can send the router to you and you can do all the configuring for me. Less headache :)

Yeah, I think they’re batteries just reached EOL. Unfortunately eskom’s erratic schedules leads to batteries giving up sooner than planned or expected- with most guys scrambling to replace dud batteries after unexpected failures like this. Just takes batteries draining beyond spec once to kill a battery. Nice to see Octotel react so quickly.

Nice one Mr Loon. I used the lil brother 3011 on gig before I downgraded and worked a charm. Crossing fingers for you!

Also hoping it helps resolve my issues.

And to give credit where credit is due, @websquadza offered me to buy one from them and they will configure it for me and ship to me. I took him up on that offer.

I too would be keen on a half decent router, after reading all this , and some pokey pokey , I’ve started noticing some weird stuff with the edgerouterx I’m using, but it’s only since the last hotfix update
