The built-in wizard is decent for basic configs, and of course a preset config you can download and restore works well too

@websquadza may I ask if you guys have been doing maintenance at around 2AM the last couple of weeks, particularly on Octotel in the Cape?

There have been a number of occasions when I have had to get off my lazy bum, go down stairs and reboot the router and the ONT due to lost internet. TIA.

@websquadza this happened again this morning. Since it wasn't answered a few pages back thought I would ask again.

Yeah, I think they’re batteries just reached EOL. Unfortunately eskom’s erratic schedules leads to batteries giving up sooner than planned or expected- with most guys scrambling to replace dud batteries after unexpected failures like this. Just takes batteries draining beyond spec once to kill a battery. Nice to see Octotel react so quickly.
Some of the FNO's just have piss poor backup systems implemented. Very little engineering thought going into a lot of these.

Some of the "solutions" I have seen are laughable and would be more akin to home DIY kit to run your TV during loadshedding. FTTx is critical infrastructure in my opinion.

Sorry, I missed your post last week.

We did perform a software update on our BNGs in Cape Town on Thursday am, just after 2am- which would have led to a brief drop as each box updated and rebooted. But this is definitely not a common occurrence (uptime was 400+ days on these boxes before these updates).

Can’t speak for Octotel. No scheduled maintenance on a frequent basis, but that’s not to say work isn’t being done on their network.

PPPoE is a very simple and reliable protocol, very rarely requiring a reboot like this on the client side. What router are you using?

Should I stop asking about the VPN?

No, we are on it. The concentrator in JHB is just not playing ball and rejecting connections sporadically (though more often than not). Which is odd because it’s virtually identical to two other boxes we use on our business side (sorry can’t put you on these). Thanks for your patience here.

I was thinking the same ,you opened a can.

No problem here. We buy these devices in bulk and our old site used to actually list quite a bit of hardware (network and voip) that we’re happy to ship out pre-configured. This was meant to be on the new site too- let me follow up with the devs and see when that’s coming.

It is an TP Link Archer VR300. Had to buy it in an emergency last year when previous (very old) router packed up.

If it happens again and I am in a position to do so I will pull the logs before I reboot.
