Hi guys, I was just wondering - how much money does a popular local website like myBB make from adverting. Is it enough to live off? Or is it just something you do for fun?

I was thinking of making my own site just for fun but I don't want it to cost me a fortune on hosting fees, ect.

I think for any site to be a success in SA, it will have to be locally hosted. And R100 will get you only about 1GB of data usage - I think

And you have to provide dynamic content that will keep people coming back for more.

Do you think a forum would last with only an off topic section?

There is nothing on there at the moment, except for the forum software.
multichoice pissed me off with their endless repeats so I setup nochoice.co.za
but haven't had time to do anything with it, yet!

i think its worth it if you can make a really succesfull website...but theres just so many websites out there already it's hard.
You got nothing to lose though, except alot of sleep!

The rule of thumb would be to make sure that the site is of a genuine interest to you ad is easily updatable. Be prepared for long nights (as stated before) designing, updating and generally promoting the site.
It has to be original, relevant and interesting.
