WeChat. What's the verdict?

I like we chat a lot. some of the cool features that no one mentioned:
- Ability to chat from your PC (i hate whats apping while i am at work,and keep checking my phone)
- you don't need to give out your number to people you wanna chat to (similar to BBM pin)
 
seems like it is for the younger folk,
Like an alternative to Mxit, it's more for meeting new people than an IM...
But you can add people from your contact list if they have the app or invite them to download it.
 
I will download it and have a look at what it can do.

I think there is too many IM now, most people (well people I know at least), are either on Whatsapp, BBM, or both.
 
So I eventually tried it... It's cool, but I just found it boring. WhatsApp is just way better.... My 1 year trial is about to expire and I still don't know how I can pay for it coz I don't own a credit card, so can't really use those virtual payment methods (Google Wallet, PayPal etc.). Anyone know of any simpler methods?

Who in his/her right mind uses video chats in South Africa? Hell, I have never even used a video call on my Galaxy S2!

Do you have a 20GB data bundle that you want to burn?
 
I've been using wechat since it started two years ago.

Very handy lil ap, almost every one uses it in China, including expats like me.

Amazed that it spread out to the rest of the world so quickly, people are using it in the US and Taiwan etc.

Some functions I dig:
Video calling - only at home on wifi though, chows a lot of bandwidth
Voice messages
Group chat
Location sharing - my girlfriend loves this feature :(
look around - find ppl around u
pick up bottles - random messages ppl leave, and u pick it up randomly (very awesome when you're bored or angry)

Anyways, best thing is it's free to use. I got some of my okes using it back in JHB in a group chat...didnt think they would actually market this app on TV though...
 
A feature I like on WeChat is the fact that you can hide your phone number. People can then only find you by name.

Hate the fact that WhatsApp shows me to everybody who has my phone number in their phone books. There are many whom I do not want to speak to. I know you can block them but some take offence to this so just way better if they cannot see me right from the start.
 
It took 2 years for people to realise their BB 8520 Curves were absolute dog #### along with BBM and they eventually moved over to whatsapp. I doubt people will move again unless something drastic happens

Well you cant do a video call on your S2 because the network doesn't support it. I use video chats all the time which is why I use WeChat. Just yesterday I was walking around the shopping center and my wife wanted to buy some stuff. So I just pointed my phone at the produce and she told me what she wanted. Its very useful if you know how to use it.

Asking why a person would want video chat is like asking why a person would want audio chat if you can text....

I have a 2GB data that I dont get close to using. Even with video chat a lot.
 
Of my 306 contacts...2 have WeChat. If I shake my phone, all I get is some skimpy-dressed Oriental-looking girl.

Why does it say network doesnt support it when I try on my vodacom number to a vodacom number? Just tested right now, it says "Unable to make a video call, try again?"

If they supported video calls they have never applied it to any of the cities I have lived in. Or perhaps there is some special feature you need to enable?

Both numbers needs to be provisioned for this service (most numbers should be already)
Both users needs to be on the 3G network
Both users needs a video calling capable handset (just because a phone has a front facing camera ... does not automaticaly mean it is capable of a video call I think).

Guess its available but you need to subscribe and a pay a monthly fee :whistle:

On a serious note though, on WeChat you can also monitor your bandwidth usage. It gives you a graph showing your LAN and mobile network usage so its easy to keep track of your usage should you make use of video chat. Can be found under Settings > Traffic Data
