So this is a new chat app. Apparently it's pretty cool... Better than WhatsApp even? Anybody actually using it. Is it any good?

Pretty good, nice interface. Good feature set, was impressed but absolutely murders my blackberry battery. So deleted it yesterday.

tested it with the gf. Had a good first impression.

Clean interface, features fit snugly into the interface. Definitely an app worth exploring.

WhatsApp does everything I could ever want from a messaging app, and all my friends use it.

Why use anything else?

It can do other things like locate other users in the vicinity. Seems like a social networking wanna be app to an extent. I hate facebook,so doesn't do it for me

Agreed. Too much of a mission to use something new now. For me it's basically the same reason why Google+ is such a ghost town, people already had Facebook and Twitter and all their friends on there already.

Hardly a ghost town.

Surprisingly Google+ is full of the people who never could be bothered with Facebook.

Granted I don't use it to chat with real world people, I use it for news and community discussions.

Yeah, it's a nice piece of software. Has some interesting features, nice emoticons and I like the ease at which one can send recorded messages (marketed as walkie talkie feature). Push notifications seems to work well and it adds users from your contacts list much the same way Whatsapp does.

I currently have around 430 identified Whatsapp users in my contacts list vs maybe a dozen Wechat users so that's where it fails thus far. If the uptake was on a par with Whatsapp I would definitely use it more often and perhaps as my default IM app but until then....

Agreed! But people want to meet new people when they get bored - that's the main reason for apps with this feature: social networking.

They are even advertising on TV as well. Saw an ad the other night. I also have it but hardly use it. It's packed full of features and has an extensive emoticon package.

Jaaaa, but the social mode thing reveals you to millions of nearby strangers. Quite creepy. And I don't know if you can turn it off.

Ah....was wondering where WeChat comes from....seems it's from China and punted here by NasPers.

Most probably got some built-in spyware if it's all running through Chinese servers.

Not for me, thank you.

Made by tencent in China. They are absolutely huge internet services provider of sort there, and apparently everyone uses wechat there

Yup, then it will definitely be checked by the chinese government and their spy agencies on a daily basis.
