Funnily enough, I was thinking about sugary drinks over the weekend. My problem is that I love sugary, fizzy drinks - especially Coke.
So, for the past few months, I've been drinking Coke Zero instead of Coke. Some users say that Coke Zero is also causes weight gain, so I did a bit of investigation.
There is lots of research on the subject, but it doesn't look like any of it is conclusive. As far as I can tell, artificial sweeteners do not cause insulin spikes, but they are still correlated with weight gain, obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc. So, I've decided to even quit that.
What I am going to do is make my own soda, using soda water and natural ingredients. I thought about getting a Soda Stream machine, but then I thought, it is probably cheaper just to buy a 2L Soda water when I need to. If I make my own drinks, then I control exactly how much sugar is in them, if any. I won't use any artificial sweeteners at all, not even stevia. And only on the weekends, not during the week.
I'm going away next weekend, so I plan to have my first test of this in 2 weeks time. Planning to make homemade lemonade and raspberry-vanilla soda. I see some sites suggest making a French soda, which is where you add a little bit of cream to it. So I'll try that out too.
So, this weekend was GREAT exercise wise, but not great diet wise. I had a pizza and a slab of Cadbury's to myself on Friday night, then on Saturday I had a few Cokes and Coke Zeros, and on Sunday, more Coke and Coke Zeros. I had to finish them by the end of Sunday, because I don't drink carbonated soft drinks during the week. It made sense at the time.
EDIT: Not sure of the accuracy of my scale, but when I weighed yesterday, it said 87kg.
