Weight Loss Thread 2014

That type of training will lead to muscle building. So don't panic about the weight. Focus more on fat percentage and waist size.

Out of interest. I did an experiment yesterday to see what effect exercise has on weight measurement. I weighed myself. Went for a 10km run. Weighed in again. "Lost" 1kg due to water loss. Logically I regained it after rehydrating myself.

An interesting thing I read in Noaks' book was about Simon Gear and how he ran a bunch of marathons without losing weight.
The thing is once you lose weight it enables your training, and not training enables your losing weight.
Still it was weird how my calorie consumption was less than my calorie expenditure yet I didnt lose any weight.
I have always had a very high muscle mass, Im built more like a rugby player than a typical endurance athlete :p

The scale means nothing. Nor does weighing yourself everyday. Your weight can fluctuate just based on hydration up to 2kg.

Body fat % decrease should be the goal. As that is pure fat loss. Losing lean mass along with fat is pointless imho.

I get enough protein to maintain my lean mass so that shouldnt be a problem. The exercise I do generally means I will keep the lean muscle going.

It is nothing new that to lose weight, it is diet first, exercise second.

But I suspect we have the same problem. I bulk easily, so I decided to change my diet and fitness regime with the intention for overall wellness. I scaled done strength training to once a week and the rest is cardio and stretching. I lost 4kgs by just doing it and I'm slowly and constantly losing weight, but not as fast as some of the other people on this thread

Im pretty sure I will be in the same boat, it takes very little effort for me to bulk when Im doing serious weight training.
Losing mass on the other hand is quite a tricky one!
Im guessing I have about 10kg max that I could lose fat wise before I start losing lean muscle.
Still it looks like this method of eating will be beneficial for endurance based on tests that dr Attia has done.

Anyway for the average person to measure his fat % at home?

4 or 7 point skin fold caliper test is the most accurate and inexpensive way of doing it - other than going for hydrostatic testing which is the most accurate but not exactly accessible for most people.

Is that the machines they were testing at Virgin Active a year or two ago?

Not as far as I know. Those trackers are notoriously bad and inaccurate. The problem with machines doing these tests are that various levels of hydration influences the results. Skin don't lie. Fat thickness don't lie. :D

You've never met my fat :p

Tell that to a woman :D

I'm not talking about those current machines that states that I'm 25% fat :( (which is impossible). Menlyn had this funny machine where you had to stand barefoot on and hold the handles. They were around for testing about 2 years ago.

I had a tablespoon of MCT oil for breakfast this morning. Not the most tasty of brekkies I must say. All the butter and bacon and fat getting to me a bit at this stage. I am rather lazy with trying all the recipes though and I have become so used to my Wheatbix in the morning.

All in all the LCHF diet is working for me though. I miss my fruit juice though and cannot find any real reason for not having Coke Zero.

Hehe. Indeed.

I have not seen those machines. But again I can only imagine they use some kind of electrical measurement that sends a pulse through your body taking into account resistance and time from point to point. These can be used, however care should be taken to just use the machine under the same conditions. I can guarantee you that you will get a reading now, go and drink 2 liters of water and come back 3 hours later and get a different reading. As long as all variables are equal then it can at least be used to track progress.

Agreed. The same with weight. Look at the trend over time, not the absolutes.
