Weight loss

I was really depressed yesterday about the insulin resistance thing. Fortunately I'm blessed with a sunny disposition so I'm over it now and looking forward to some weight loss this week :)

Don't stress. I been living with this IR thing for over 10years n it's only in the last year that I'm really understanding it and how to combat it. All it takes it education and will power and we on our way.

N don't bash me for sitting with this thing for 9 years... University and establishing a career tends to put one's health on the back burner. Its never too late until you're dead.

what makes you think you're resistant? The only way to really know is to go for checks.

Have you cut out carbs completely?

Breakfast this morning was a 3 egg ham and cheese omelette, eggs beaten with full cream milk (I was out of cream). Lots of cheese :)

Have you cut out carbs completely?

In the space of a month I have had 2 slices of bread and probably 2 med sized potato.

I don't eat pasta anymore and the only sugar is what is in fruits and the yogurt I eat. I've tried as much as possible to cut out the carbs and it's not easy coz someone is eating a toasted cheese sandwich in the office right now and I want a piece :-(

After doing a whole lot of reading about it, I suspect I am. I've been trying to lose this weight for about 5 years now and the only time I make any progress is if I ditch carbs. Even if I exercise and eat healthy I dont lose any weight as long as I'm eating bread and rice. I don't even overeat. You'd be shocked at how little I eat, but because I'm the only vegetarian in my family I end up eating only carbs cos it's a pain to make vegetable food just for me.

I'm going to miss pasta much more than bread.

Have you tried brown spaghetti and brown wild rice and the woolie low gi breads?

I am in a similar situation, I battle to get below 122kg but this is the first time I have cut out sugar completely and will just try and push past the up coming weight plateau. I do have low GI bread in the morning with my poached eggs, but no more rice or potatoes or pasta but on occasion brown spaghetti.

Doesn't work for you how? You don't like it, or you don't lose?

The keyword here is occasion. As GGD said it should be a treat when you have it once in a while, and the brown pasta options will be better then the regular. Tastes bleh though:-S

reduced proteins as well, although that's really difficult

OK - Myth debunking time:

Kidney failure. Consuming too much protein puts a strain on the kidneys, which can make a person susceptible to kidney disease.
Rubbish. In fact I know people on the lowcarber forum who had impaired kidney function, who actually saw improvements (less protein excreted in urine) as they continued with the diet.

High cholesterol . It is well known that high-protein diets (consisting of red meat, whole dairy products, and other high fat foods) are linked to high cholesterol. Studies have linked high cholesterol levels to an increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
bulldust. High cholesterol is directly linked to carb metabolism. See my comments re my cholesterol above.

Osteoporosis and kidney stones. High-protein diets have also been shown to cause people to excrete a large amount of calcium in their urine. Over a prolonged period of time, this can increase a person's risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones. A diet that increases protein at the expense of a very restrictive intake of plant carbohydrates may be bad for bones, but not necessarily a high-protein intake alone.
Take supplements if you're worried about calcium. The risk actually comes from drinking too much water, not the high protein diet.
I've had a kidney stone - but it only manifested when I was NOT low-carbing.
Cancer*. One of the reasons high-protein diets increase the risks of certain health problems is because of the avoidance of carbohydrate-containing foods and the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants they contain. It is therefore important to obtain your protein from a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Not only are your needs for protein being met, but you are also helping to reduce your risk of developing cancer.
*citation needed. Atkins also recommends vitamin supplementation. So do it. Then this whole point is moot anyway.

Unhealthy metabolic state (ketosis). Low-carb diets can cause your body to go into a dangerous metabolic state called ketosis since your body burns fat instead of glucose for energy. During ketosis, the body forms substances known as ketones, which can cause organs to fail and result in gout, kidney stones, or kidney failure. Ketones can also dull a person's appetite, cause nausea and bad breath. Ketosis can be prevented by eating at least 100 grams of carbohydrates a day.
What the ****? Ketones cause all of these? Bull**** bull**** bull**** fearmongering RUBBISH.

today is mexican with the work colleagues. Ole! then my sister is going to another restuarant for her birthday. :erm:

And the rationalization continues.

Where did I rationalize? Don't make ASSumptions. I stated a fact. I'm eating much better than i did before. I understand my relationship to food much better. I won't hold myself to ransom. Life's to short. So keep your kark statements to yourself thanx.
