I have a 4Mbit line. My internet is intermittently dropping. It doesn't completely dissapear ( torrents still run at 1Mbit) but I can't load any webpages properly. Sometimes after about a minute webpages will load, but mostly they just time out. Stopping the torrents doesn't improve the browsing experience at all?

I don't think it's a noise issue as the exchange is on the same block as me. I get 30dB SNR and 13dB attenuation.

Any ideas why this would be happening?

Hey Dude
Whose your ISP and what time of day did you experience this?

I'm on an Openweb gold package. It has happened randomly since I have had the line installed. Not linked to time of day.

that, and if that happens login to your router and see what speed it picks up
i had that prob 2weeks ago where my line will just randomy drop to 1mbps or 2mbps speed (adsl line)
and when i reset/reboot it it goes back to 4

maby u got the same problem, and in that time its also verry unstable
and i got a db of 39.5 :/

Sounds like an exchange issue imo.Who manages your line?

Telkom. I'm going to go buy a phone so that I can call them. My exchange looks good from all that I can figure out. Its a big building on its own erf 200m from me. And there are people reporting stable 7Mbit lines that are also on this exchange.

Torrents overwhelming your router. Try limiting the maximum number of connections your torrent client allows.

I seriously doubt whether this is the issue as closing the torrent client completely doesn't have any noticeable effect. Also, I have a pretty good router.

How long did you wait after closing the torrent client to see the effect?

Long enough. Closed it rebooted all hardware and tested it before opening torrent client again. Made no difference. I find it quite strange that the torrents run at 1-2Mbit (instead of 4Mbit) almost without issues (it drops to 10kB/s for very short periods)

I'm phoning telkom from work now. Been holding 44mins. Thanks Telkom;)

HAAHAHAHAHA Yeah but those long waiting periods are only for existing customers. When phoning 10210 I accidently chose the new customer option and after entering my postal address I got a consultant in less than a minute! So either Telkom has no new customers or they just shoved too many people in that department.

I get the same issue as OP, only im not using torrents, for me its my NNTP downloads, and im on Telkom TI.

I finally got it sorted by switching to a 10 Mbps line. Still haven't found out what the issue was but at least I have fast stable internet now. I feel like I deserve an award.

nice :D

can u do a speed test for us ?

i am planing on getting 10mbps myself (openweb power gold)

Will do as soon as I get home this evening. My internet went down again from 18h00 to 22h30 last night. But it is a lot better than it was. Getting ping of 10ms, <5ms jitter and 8.4 Mbps. This is pretty stable most of the time. I'm <300m from the exchange though, so I'm getting really good SNR and attenuation. My modem says max sync speed is 23Mbps.

nice
i am far from my exchange so will only prob get 8mbps :(
8.4 is good
over 1mb/s download :)

Sorry for the delay. Had some emergencies at home. Speedtest as promised:
