Weird Issue:DVI not working on gpu and mobo

Hi,

Built a pc for a friend.
i7 7700
Asus Z270 Prime-A
16gb corsair vengeance ram
700 watt super Flower psu
Galax 1070ti Sniper white

Initially, gpu dvi worked fine. After a week it stopped functioning. It started with small weird artifacts.

Thereafter, It will boot to the bios screen and go to a black screen and stay there.

Tried the HDMI on the gpu, works fine.
Removed the gpu and tried on board dvi. Doesn't post at all.

On board hdmi works fine.

Tried 2 different monitors and cables.

Updated the Mobo bios. Graphics card drivers. Resetted the Bios as well. Changed any relevant settings.

TL;DR: DVI does not work on gpu and motherboard.
HDMI works on both.

Any ideas?
 
It's 2018, why DVI at all.

But just so you are aware there are different varieties of DVI are you sure the ports and the cables match?

DVI-D, DVI-A and DVI-A.

I seem I recall the pin outs were different and maybe the monitor is DVI-A and the graphics card only DVI-D.

It would explain why neither port works.

It worked initially thou for 2 weeks... Monitors are dvi-d.

Got the full pin layout dvi-d.

I'm encouraging him to move to HDMI. He is still legitimately worried about the dvi ports as he initially had artifacts. Not on HDMI. Thou.

Oh right if it worked before then the Windows Update factor is way more likely.
 
I've had many a DVI port bust on me. Suspect the voltage / amps but never really knew.

All I know is I have cards running for years with DVI broken but both DP and HDMI fine.

If under warranty, replace the card. Otherwise live with HDMI

Going to do that. Still. it's the dvi ports on the motherboard (no image at all) and gpu (posts to the motherboard screen and stalls).
It's like the motherboard is blocking it somehow. Really frustrating.
