Hi Everyone

I am looking for a decent p&s camera, preferably a canon or sony. Its no fun lugging the 40d everywhere.

I had one of these, the asian version IXY 900 IS. Now that one was left on a bus somewhere in Greece in the middle of last year.

Should cost between 2-3 grand, i had a look at orms and outdoorphoto but am no sure witch one is best value for money.

Should have a nice fast response time and decent image quality that's about all.

Any recommendations ?

thanks

We have a Sony DSC-H3 at work, its a bit more bulky than most point and shoots, but has 10x zoom and very fast response times. Cost about R3k. Doesn't have a normal viewfinder, only the LCD screen.

Not sure on the pricing in SA but I have a Canon Powershot 790IS - called a IXUS 90IS in SA - which I'm very happy with. 10MP, 3x optical zoom, 3" screen, good battery life, excellent picture quality. Really impressed with this camera. IMO Canon are way better than Sony.

Kodak Easyshare M1033 is a awesome camera, I just bought one recently.
R2000!

Great camera, takes amazing pictures and has great features.

+1

That range with IS is superb.

And such a pleasant experience you had trying to find something as simple as a spare battery . . .
I just called the following place:

[email protected]

(011) 803-8983
(011) 234-0496

And the lady who answered was very helpful, she's going to get back to me (if they have stock of the battery I am looking for)

But what was interesting was when I told her my issue, she interrupted me and told me exactly what I was going to tell her.

She agrees saying that she hates Kodak, their service is horrible!

...if only I had known this a few days ago :(

Still, I'm going to get hold of Kodak in SA and give them a piece of my mind.

My 2c:

Canon and Nikon have been making cameras for a very long time. I would go for either....
Sony are new to the game and never made still cameras before the advent of the digital camera. I'm sure that their stuff is good, but I wouldn't buy it.

I would stay away from Kodak, hp and other non-traditional camera makers.

I have a Canon A540 Powershot (c. 2004) and I'm very happy with it. I also have a Nikon D80 digital SLR camera. I'm very happy with that also.

Megapixels: anything more than 6MP is more than good enough. Most compacts do not have good enough optics to make the sensor a limitation - the resolution of the lens is not good enough that a higher megapixel count will not result in a sharper photograph.

Zoom: Depends on what you want. 8X is a good mid range for me.
