I've always found it a pain to make a trip to the vet to find they don't have it and need to order. And I don't much like 'phones.

The online petfood places that have sprung up lately are the answer to my prayers - pop online, and three to four days later the security guard at work comes running out with a packet of dogfood that's been delivered, and puts it in my boot. What could be simpler? :)

I would also order online - but the hills Prescription Diet is only available at a Vet for whatever reason.

I don't get the whole system of selling petfood. Why can't you buy the premium brands from a supermarket?

I can only imagine it is so the food companies can control what is charged for the food...

true, but technically as I understand it the Prescription Diet is only supposed to be used under vet supervision, the first few months they put my lab on it we had to take him in every month for weighing before we could buy the next bag

How many bags of premium food at R500-R1000 a bag are you going to move at PnP or Checkers when people are there to save R2 on a can of coffee and buy 4 chocolates for R20? It's all about target market and people paying that kind of money for dog food are shopping at Woolworths.

Never had that issue - have had dogs on Hills C/D, Z/D and metabolic - were all recommended by the vet but that is where their involvement in the buying process stopped.

It's all about target market and people paying that kind of money for dog food are shopping at Woolworths.

We spend that on dog food and don't shop at woolies ;)

That's true. I saw a lady the other day at Checkers who bough a **** ton of "Reduced" foods...people like that are not interested in buying premium dog food :p
 
I'm currently feeding my pets raw dog food as the one scratches continuously non-stop. A lady in my area mixes up certain animal parts and then freezes them and delivers. Just defrost a pack for each dog overnight. They love the stuff so much it's quite scary.

Whether it's at PnP, Checkers, Spar or Woolworths, I just don't want have to rush to a specific shop, and get there before they close to buy my dog food. Spar is open till 9 or something. They have a fridge of Haagen Das icecream which is not an budget price product, so why not sell decent pet food too?

Because people are selfish and would generally rather spend R100 on ice-cream for themselves than R750 on a bag of food for their dogs.
You also need to remember that for every 1 person that really loves their dogs and believe they deserve the best there are 50, maybe a 100, who knows, people that just want to get the cheapest bare minimum for their dog.

Throw into the mix people that are struggling financially etc and there you have it. Spar, PnP, Checkers etc etc stock what sells. It's supply and demand and they would rather move 10 bags of rubbish food then 1 bag of premium food. It's not worth the effort, man hours and profit loss to source and supply a handful of premium bags of dog food to keep 2 customers happy. Whether that's inconvenient for you or not they really don't care.

Don't believe the advertising for a second. Spar, Pnp, Checkers etc aren't full of happy go lucky, bounce around bend over backwards people that are there to cater to your every whim; they want your money and however they can maximise profit and minimise effort they will do.

I'm happy to buy my cat food from the vet. They are often open later than my local supermarket. They know who I am, ask about my cats by name, I get personalized advice and also loyalty discounts on certain products.

The Montego Karoo is Montago's premium dog food and is said to be comparable to Hill's in composition. Spoke with that food lab person there, he provided good analysis, that together with a R1500 per month Hills bill, really convinced me to change to a premium brand at R460 per month for three dogs. Hasn't been any noticeable poop increase. Not sure where you should buy, I just get it from takealot with free delivery. If you call Montego they'll send someone around with samples if you're in a major centre I guess. Also they'll explain the food composition to you in detail. Properly, not like a regular call centre.

That's not relevant. There are customers who spend that, and why should those products not be available with the same level of convenience as the Pedigree and Bobtail that they do stock?

I'm pretty certain that the margin on premium pet food is a lot higher than the average for a supermarket.
