He had a massive infection in his intestines when he was a wee pup due to my father giving him scraps from the table -.- Cost me a fortune at the vet.

I would imagine your father had the same infection of the intestines.

A dog has a much more hardy digestive system than us puny humans.

What have dogs been eating for centuries? I am not saying kibble is bad for them but according to what I can see with my own dogs is that they are doing much better on raw diet

They live longer now because of better diets. Like I said, I was convinced that raw is the better option, but my dogs refused to eat it, which is why I went back to kibble. I'm by no means a fan of the kibble industry, but there isn't always much choice.

I used vegetables, oats, brown rice, A grade mince, liver and kidneys.

My one also refuse to eat it out of his bowl. He did not eat ANY food for 2 days straight. I then had to feed him the raw food with a tea spoon which he gladly ate.

I assume he was just not used to the texture of the food when his snout touched it. After about a week he ate it by himself.

I also noticed that my dogs are not bloated at all. I immediatly noticed it and I think kibble contains a lot of useless filler.

was getting painful looking at the expression on his face after he'd finished eating and he kept looking at me and the empty bowl like he was saying "dude, where's the rest of it?"

Doesn't seem to work on me as I just ignore them, my black cat Marmite does the same .

Labs would eat all day if they could

My two are on 200g of dry food each (Royal Canin Labrador) and one small can of quality wet (Husky, Hahns, Petleys) between them a day served with Bobtail gravy. Both are spayed bitches, Pheobe's 30kg and Pippa 35kg (but she's big for a lab).

Mine is eating 500g

I shoot my dog up with bull hormones before eating. I feed him pap and polony. I live by the motto "to catch the prey you must be the prey". So that has worked quite well until now, it keeps him lean and he has a lot of energy. After reading this post I thought it people take it, how bad can it be for the dog?

We had good results using the Hills metabolic food for dogs that are over weight.

It is just a touch pricey.

Hills Metabolic is still available - bought a bag yesterday (well we get the mini one because this is for an old Pug with not very many teeth left) was R515 for a 6kg bag.

My vet said the Metabolic has been replaced by the Perfect Weight a couple of months ago

That's bloody expensive for a 6kg bag. I'm paying about R750 or so for a 12 kg

Oh - as far as I knew the metabolic was a relatively recent thing.

It is one of the speciality foods that you can only get at the vet - but it has worked wonders in keeping the weight of this old girl under control so we are happy to pay the extra cash.

Just checked the Hills website, Metabolic is still available as Prescription Diet, Perfect Weight is a new Science Plan Diet so looks like the folks at my vet are a little bit misinformed or else they're being incentivised to push Perfect Weight

There are just so many different formulas of dog food available, that it must be almost impossible for any but the largest vet to keep a decent stock level of them all, and I'm pretty sure that many vets drop some of the similar (and less popular) ones from their line up in an effort to keep stock costs down a bit.

Hi,

It is called DOGGOBONE. I buy the classic (all in one) food for my dogs and as a treat they sometimes get a roll of tripe.

I buy mine from a place called FOR PETS SAKE, they are in the complex close to the post office in Brackenfell.

Its best to call them first and ask if they have stock of the classic as they sometimes have to order which they do on tuesdays and you can then collect on a thursday or friday.

At first ny one dog refused to eat it out of his bowl, I had to feed him with a teaspoon but its only because they are not used to the texture of the raw food but now they almost run me over when I take them their bowls.

Their bowel movements are healthy and the poo is white, meaning that they take ALL of the nutrients in that is in the food. The poo also does NOT smell...

Both my dogs are shar pei's, which are prone to skin problems but with this food there is nothing wrong with their skins.

Both of the dogs weigh 20kg and they each eat one 500g "loaf" per day.

Ahh, nice to see other people give raw.

My 2 boerboels are on Doggobone as well, since they were about 4 months old.

The older male weighs about 73Kg and the younger bitch is around 60Kg odd.
The male gets 2Kg per day (eats twice a day), 1Kg in the morning and 1Kg in the evening.
The bitch gets 1 - 1.5Kg per day, same times as the male.

They both fast on a Friday (no food, only water) for the detox process to flush their intestines.

Twice a month they get raw tripe, raw chicken guns and whole eggs (shell included) and my wife likes to spoil them and add some yoghurt (plain, double thick).

Haven't taken my dog to a vet for any infections/sicknesses etc. other than a yeast infection in the male's ears.
Both very healthy dogs and they grew nicely into their bone structure (slow growing process than that of the spurts they get when on Hill's and the likes).

You're lucky. Neither of the two small town vets I have access to carry very much selection at all. Even driving an hour to Pietermaritzburg and going to the petfood shop in the mall doesn't help much, as quite often what I want isn't in stock. They do offer to order it in for you, but that doesn't help a lot when you don't live five minutes away.

I've started ordering online now. Works much better (except for when Royal Canin themselves don't have stock).

Some of the Hills foods you can't get anywhere but from the vet - sometimes this requires ordering from the Vet because they generally don't keep a lot of stock of the more specialised foods.

Never wait much more than a day when doing this.
