I am curious to see what people spend on average on their cell phones.
I am trying to guage what contracts are worth while, if at all. Or if pay as go really is the cheaper option.

This can be contract or pay as you go. I am looking more at individuals rather than company phones as those are normally abnormally high.

Also if on contract what contract are you on?

Thanks guys ;)

R220 for MTN Anytime200. Came with a Nokia 5800. Sweet deal as far as I am concerned. Looking to change to off peak though... Almost never exceed my "free" minutes:)

Pay as you Go : R64 a month over the last 12 months.
EDIT: @ R2.85 minute (peak time) that's 22 minutes a month on the phone.

Ok so you are proof that you can get a cell phone bill under a R100 on pay as you go davemc ;)

pro call 120 my monthly on average is R250
5800xm free

Neotel ~ R1200
Vodacom (Weekend Everyday) ~R350
MTN (Prepaid) ~ R120
Cell C (Prepaid) ~R220

Long distance relationship + international calls

About R250 a month on family top up from vodacom. About R50 for calls and messages. The rest for data bundles.

Also have a cell c prepaid card spend about 20 bucks a month on that for free weekend minutes.

Used to be about R1,100 - but I've brought it down to R450 or so due to lack of service, and me not wanting to support MTN.

When I move to Vodacom it'll probably be R1,000.

while i was still on prepaid, i used to spend about R1200 during busy months (school holidays, christmas etc) and about R600 every other time.

when i first got a contract, i was on talk 240 and my bill averaged about R1200. it even hit R1800 once

did some maths and now i'm on talk 500 and i have yet to pay more than the R810 monthly fee for the contract. match made in heaven.

now i'm just waiting for september, i'm up for an upgrade then and the N97 will be released :D if vodacom even thinks about making me pay extra for that phone, i'm leaving for mtn. did you hear that vodacom?

Well, when I was working in Air-Freight i would rather not mention. Mostly international calls, to a limitless number of countries, at any time of day or night, including roaming. I think the max was in the R4000 region, but on average R2500-R3000.

Otherwise, been on a weekender everyday for about 4 years now, and I would say that on average I have been paying around R250 a month. End of last year and beginning of this year I was naught though, and managed to run up R500 for about 5 months in a row. Have managed to cut down to the usual R200-R250 though now.

About R400 on anytime200. I like the per second billing. I keep most calls short and use SMS's to keep it down.

Thanks for the feedback chaps - I am surprised to see quite a few of you not spending an arm and leg on your phone bill. I guess I am really trying to avoid that.

I guess pay as go really can cut costs to a point. You can still use your phone when you need it and not really have to be paying R300+ a month.

I am torn between getting a contract and a nice phone, or stick with payg and save a couple of rond. Tough call. I have had a contract before and R500 a month was a bit hectic.

Before contract I paid about 800 on voda prepaid and 50 cellc topup.

Now I pay 500-600 for 350 anytime plus BIS, but I do allot more on device surfing.

And all the other perks are nice.

TopUp315 @R324 + 200sms bundle = R370/month
Got a R3500 gift voucher and a crappy phone with it a year ago. Bought a monitor with it :)
