What do your pay your gardener?

I am in in the Southern Suburbs in Cape Town. I have a Malawian gardener who also does painting/varnishing and other odd handywork when I need it done. I pay him R250/day and give him lunch. He is now asking for more money. I'm not too happy about this as I do not have a huge property and sometimes I really have to look around to find stuff to keep him busy.

What is a fair wage in 2017?
 
R200 for front and back 6Hours work and I give lunch.

Johannesburg - Garden service. 4 guys clean, trim and cut our garden (using their own equipment and remove the refuse) in under an hour once a week. R250 per month. 1000m2 property.
 
hmmm, I pay mine R150/day, provide lunch and pickup/dropoff.

Only have him twice a month though, am looking to increase it this month.
 
My garden services are R80 per month, they come once a month.
There is not much for them todo though...
 
My garden is now a semi-desert region due to water restrictions. No need for a gardener.
 
In Johannesburg.

R180 + lunch, 6 hour day. Increase next month to R190.
 
Question - do you need to give gardeners an increase, if they work for you for more than one year?

Exactly. Mine is close to that and because the gardener comes on a Thursday he's not even allowed to water anything in the garden. It's hard enough just finding stuff for him to do.
 
R120 , three hours work, just raking up leaves and turning soil in Flowerbed... He also gets a plate of nosh and a hot coffee!

Have a lawn cutting service in twice a month for R160.00
 
Well... I normally ask them what's their fee. (Because they come and go, never stick around for long. Ask them to come a certain day, never pitches). Latest guy is from Malawi. R120 a day. About 5 - 6 hours busy. Mostly raking leaves, pitching flower beds. I do my own mowing of the lawn.
OO, and I make him breakfast. Eggs, toast, sausage and coffee. You'd pay R60+ for that at Wimpy. :D
 
R150 a day, and lunch...

Works for about 6 hours or so.

Scored a Gemini Hut out of me for free about 2 years ago though, since I had no need for it and a portion of it needed repairing.
 
We are in Pretoria and pay our gardener R275 per day, provide breakfast and lunch. He can help himself to things in the fridge (since I don't have time to prepare something for him).

Do you need to give him an annual increase if he works for you longer than 1 year? Depends, do you also expect an annual increase at your job to cope with 6-10% inflation? Poor/low socio-economic status people also have to cope with inflation, so yes...yes you do have to give an annual increase.

Edit: We have a rather large yard so it is usually 5-8 hours of work (depending on what we outline for him at the beginning of the day). He can leave when he finishes as long as all the work is done and done well. This has never been a problem.
 
Our gardener gets R200 p/d with lunch.
He also works once a week in our home for R200p/d
 
I usually pick up 2 of our forum members (Don't want to mention names, but thanks guys) once a week to sort my garden...R200 per person per day and free breakfast and lunch.
