Some applications allow for rotation other's don't - it's up to the developer afaik.

Another possibility is the screen rotation hold switch may have been activated by the phone's owner. You mentioned txt which makes me think you were trying to send an SMS? The messages application does allow for portrait and landscape so I'd check that switch (in iOS 4.3 they re-enabled the option to reassign the mute switch to orientation lock).

My iPhone4 is the best phone I've ever owned.

What it doesn't do well:
- VPN disconnects when the screen locks. It's irritating because it means the wifi stops working at the office or rather the wifi works fine but because VPN disconnects when screen locks the network access is stopped.
- I'd like to have separate icons for email accounts. All email accounts merged into one app is great but there is no way to tell which account has email at a glance. The native email client is better than the gmail app and ibismail so I'd like to have separate icons for the various separate email accounts all using the native app.

I love my iPhone, but am honest enough to admit it has some glaring shortfalls:
- receiving and processing calendar invites is very lame
- can't attach multiple photos to emails, or other types of files
- Bluetooth
- SMS delivery
- gmail handling is bad: limited search functionality etc

- can't delete multiple sms threads at once (similar ui is used in other apps)
- sms little text box is irritating - scrolling across is a mission
- in general, i find selection of text and scrolling across an overflowing text field awful.
- can't accept meeting invitations using gmail or google apps account
- camera quality not so hot
- no native ota bookmark/password sync in safari that i know of (i know itunes and mobile me can do it)
- no swype
- i've had better battery life
- no charging via usb mini
- no usb mass storage
- no sd card
- tv-out cable not included

Simple question: how will the phone fit into your life.

Like Glue said If you only use it to make calls and take a photo or 2, get a Nokia.
If you just connect your phone to your PC once on a blue moon to sync your data or store all your music on and hate tinkering get an iPhone.
If you use your phone as a computer away from your computer get an Android.

iPhone does not have a unified file system, each application has its own file system and do not share between each other. You can not use it as a USB dongle. You can not copy/documents music to and from your iPhone and share it with multiple apps on the device. You can not copy a file onto the phone using USB and share it via Wi-Fi. Sure there is apps to pretend to have the function like Air-Sharing but again to pay for applications that other devices do natively is a bit of a pain.

Up and until Android users in South Africa have access to Paid-for applications your app-crap ratio on iPhone will be higher than Android. That being said most of the must have applications is available on any platform (Facebook, Twitter, Mybroadband Mobile and so on). Both also have some really crap applications. So only thing you missing would be games, but to really be honest on both you have to break the law in order to get them and yes creating a US account to access games that is not rated by South African Gaming board is against the law.

iPhone GUI does look like it was designed by 1 person so everything looks and feels like its one device, unlike Android that some applications venture away from the uniform look and feel. Problem is that you stuck with that look on iPhone. Not a deal braker for many that loves the look.

I have iOS, Android and Windows Mobile Devices and to be honest to really decide what phone will fit you best would be to look at how you would be using the device. For me when I leave my house my DHD is the one I put in my pocket because its my computer away from my desk, not my phone that can play music/games.

I have the Desire and Ipod Touch. I would get Android its just easier to live with for me, no iTunes(BS)(US accounts & crap). No restrictions plug in the usb get a flashdrive ffs just like that no drama! i use rockplayer which works like VLC true bliss, i use winamp for music & sync(what else can kick the lama's a$s?)
I prefer Android above iOS, apple really chokes their device

But i wouldn't suggest HTC because of small things like the loudspeaker which is crap everything else is great but Samsung & Sony will probably build better quality speakers, mics, cameras and things(just my guess)

I can't seem to sms if have under R4.00 airtime remaining...for some reason?

other than that it's pretty sweet, especially when jailbroken.

Are you referring to http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flashdrive-8gb-universal/id399326092?mt=8
Any case great find thanx Will recommend it to a friend that i know.

For me it wont help as I copy xls files to my device and edit them at a customer on the phone, where I either email them off or copy off using Wi-Fi.

http://itunes.apple.com/za/app/flash-drive-view-save-drag/id300366636?mt=8

No this one.

EDIT: still won't help you as it doesn't support xls document editing.

It does everything well so please get one HTC_guy! :D Don't wait, go get one NOW!

* Anything to keep you out of the DHD thread :p

Hey... I thought those guys were all much, much too busy posting in the iPhone threads ;)

The iPhone don't do copying of files without iTunes very well.

First you need to install iTunes (90MB), which brings the horrible Bonjour! with it. The only way to get music and movies on your phone is to sync with iTunes....well, that is after you have created your iTunes account with Apple. Been there, got an iPhone 3G to prove it. Nowadays it's actually too simple, I just plug in my HTC Desire HD to my pc's USB port, a menu pops up on the phone and asks me if I just want to charge it, sync it with HTC sync, use it as a mass storage device, etc. And here comes the real beauty....then you simply drag and drop full movies and music to your phone. Done.

Another thing that irritated the crap out of me was that if I made a "best of" music folder with my fav tunes in it...let's call it Coolhits.... & then imported it into iTunes, iTunes would create a music folder for every song in the Coolhits folder! I had 100 songs in there, so I was fuming when I saw what has happened. Not with Android....just drag and drop your Coolhits folder onto your SD card & it keeps all 100 songs in the Coolhits folder. Pure genius!!

Same when copying movies .... avi format....create a video folder on your SD card & drop the movies in there. My Desire HD plays avi format as standard, so no reason to convert it.

All the apps I had on my iPhone, I also found in the Android market + a lot more.

I took out my iPhone last weekend to see if it's still alive, but the 3.5'' display is just too small for proper web surfing and playing games. A 4'' or 4.3'' display is just perfect.

Lastly, I put my phone on the desk, two taps and it's a wifi hotspot. It can't be easier to use your phone as a router/modem.

*My Desire HD is still unrooted, don't know why people think you must root it. :wtf:
