It seems the whole South Africa is just focussed on 2010 (has something to do with a faggy sport or something).

My question is what happens after 2010? Is there a future vision for all the effort and money that is thown into this whole 2010 thing ? What will South Africa be like in 2011 ?

Will we really be better off after having 2010 or will would it have been better if it was just a normal year like any other ?

What has changed in Germany ?

Appart from the people that made a killing during the Wolrd Cup, nothing has changed, there was no sustained programs in place and the country just carries on as normal, government spent Billions of Euros on stadiums and fixing up areas (Before the WC) but that was it.

Life just goes on as normal with a few people making a killing and the rest just got a stiffy like it will be here in SA

Cape Town's DA, probably the most controlled budget out of all regions, has made it clear that some of it's upliftment and development projects will suffer due to the 2010 costs - just cant find the article online now.

I was hoping that they'd be forced to address the crime problem and demonstrate to FIFA that they have a handle on it ahead of the WC, but it looks like they intend only beefing up security at the time in the areas around the venues.

I think this world cup is heading for a bit of a financial disaster. Maybe not just because it is in Africa, but rather because of the global recession.

The key thing about 2010 and all the activities around it, is the expansion of sorely needed infrastructure, be it civil, telecommunications, hospitality industry, etc.

All the construction, developments and all other good things is just not going to disappear after the games. It will still be around for us citizens to take advantage of. TBH, the World Cup to me is just a convinient reason for all this development taking place. All municipalities and companies would have had a VERY difficult time financing all this spending had it not been for the event, especially taking into consideration the current economic climate.

So what will SA look like in 2011? That's anyone's guess, all I know is that I wont have to drive to the airport anymore, oh and there will (or rather, should) be all sorts of new bandwidth available to the SA market, and hopefully that will bring down costs a bit. But even if it does not bring down costs that much, the telco's will have reduced cost of sales and they can make more money, which leads to more taxes. Unless they are the Dave King type of course.

All in all, good tings man! :D

uh...maybe the start of a decent public transport system. completion of airport city rail link by 2011. the next few phases of the BRT system in cape town. operation of green point stadium by stade de france/SAIL consortium. waterfront expansions plans. tallest tower in cape town. cape town station goes underground.green point tennis centre. aquatic centre planned. south africa bids for 2015 and 2019 rugby world cup. R10 billion transport legacy in cape town.

most importantly, the DA and the coalition parties continue to run the city, perhaps even the province.

Olympic bidding starts 2011...

Exactly. I always get confused when people say nothing with be left behind.

oh..some others. cticc phase 2 expansion "greenest building in South Africa", f1 Grand prix?

Olympics in Slaapstad? :p

Might work once they've finished upgrading the road network.

If Cape Town bid again it would be a shoo-in. The very expensive bid book put together by Chris Ball and team at a cost of millions of rands would have to be dusted off, updated and resubmitted- and save the country some money this time around. No excuse to waste good money on a new bid book. They haven't even used the locations in the old bid book yet.

IF (and that's a capital IF) the WC ever takes place here, this country will most likely be bankrupted. The sh**T wil really hit the fan. After the tourists who are naive enough to come here have been robbed, maimed, murdered, raped and/or highjacked the last shred of credibility that this banana republic has, will have dissipated and we will be regarded as just another failed African state.
Roll on the WC and you will witness the greatest fiasco the world has seen since the charge of the Light Brigade.

1. Did you copy and paste that from somewhere? An aviation forum?

2. Many of the locations and sites proposed for the previous bid were built as Olympic priority projects.

The following venues went ahead:

- Turfhall Softball Complex
- Hartleyvale Hockey Centre
- Mew Way Indoor Centre
- Bellville Velodrome
- Culemborg Exhibition Centre, now a large car dealership
- Belhar Indoor Centre at UWC

and about 10-15 training venues e.g Gugulethu Sports Centre, Scottsdene etc.

You are right though, Wingfield and Culemborg remain vacant.
I think Century City, kills any doubt they had back in 1997 about the viability of residential structure around Century City. Its the fastest growing business and residential node in Cape Town, and one of the proposed Olympic stations, i.e. Windermere station will now go ahead

please back that up with evidence. ignorance is not evidence. in effect you need to show the billions Trevor has allocated to major infrastructure projects whether technology or transport or stadia etc. is debt and not government revenues.

You either know something we don't or you're another one of those...

Don't give yourself a heart attack. It really isn't that bad.
