What has TelkomInternet actually changed for 1 Nov?

Most ISp Aren't Cable Yet

Most of the ISP's aren't cable of providing free local bandwith or even uncapped local bandwith at a fixed price because the system they use does not incorporate this. So Telkom just dump it on the ISP's and unfortenately i think it's going to be some time before it can come into affect. Most ISP doesn't even retail in local bandwith it's only a few so far that was actually selling local bandwith for them it should be easy to implement, but for the rest I see some hard work before Christmas. Anyway Local at this point in time sux and you can't do anything usefull with it unless you like to donwload illegal software/apps/games.

Playing online gaming still requires server authentication which normally takes place outside of South Africa so with uncapped local that comes into affect after your capp has been reached can't be used for gaming, which means you will still have to use two accounts one to verify and one to play.

I use my local only to play Warcraft, there are a few local servers that one can play on using local only

Local bandwidth was free/uncapped and there were no problems providing it back then.

ya back then it was fine but now there are thousands of more ppl using adsl etc...

Funny how the rest of the world can cope just fine and they have far more ppl on adsl. You starting to think like telkom.

the capping system 'back then' worked hand-in-hand with the 24 hour reset system. If you were over your cap quota, then the next time you connected to your account (most likely at the next 24h interval), you'd be transferred to the 'capped' IP range, which only had local routes active on it and was blocked from the saix cache's.
Now they've done away with 24h resets which is cool, but now how are they going to isolate capped users from uncapped users, especially with regards to caches?

I always find it amusing how people compare internet here to overseas. Yes, they do have cheaper bandwidth there, yes, they do have more users, they also have more bandwidth. Simple supply vs demand ppl, companies have to keep prices up to lower demand for a limited supply. And it's not just Telkom that has a problem, all companies do. It is the infrastructure of the country, so maybe get an the case of the Telecommunications Department/Minister for a change.

Have a look at the lines and undersea cables connecting the rest of the world, and look at what comes to Africa. It is actually a joke.

Guys just to confirm, i've used 6GB this month on my 3GB account, and this morning I awoke to a cute little "forbidden" message while using cache.saix.net, turns out i couldnt ping anything international either. Of course we all know what that means...

How do undersea cables affect LOCAL bandwidth exactly? Telkom has a monopoly so they bear responsibility, no other companies can provide this service. Which is the fault of the DOC/ICASA.

Fair enough, I was just pointing out the impact of the lack of international bandwidth. The faults of ICASA, including the fact that there was no seperation of international/local usage until now, has caused the overcharging of local bandwidth because it fell under the same usage.

Regards.

True, ICASA is more of a problem than Telkom. If Telkom was properly regulated and had competition we could all just choose to ignore them. :D

Why do they want to cap local? When it was still free a while back I was thinking that it would be ridiculious to cap local.. well, they did that. Since every ADSL modem connected to their lines made of gold needs to pay rental isn't this enough? Think of it. Every single ADSL modem is paid for monthly (the access portion). Isn't this enough? Seems to me they are trying to milk the cow dry..

Those of you that are capped on their 3GB accounts - do you still have full local available on that account or just the banking sites?

I was capped on my 3GB account when TI usage reported about 3.5G (SAIX usage about 6.4GB). At that stage I was allocated a 165.... IP address and could access all local sites. I subsequently purchased a 1GB topup from TI to test how it works and have currently used just over 1GB without being capped again.

Do i use the local after i have been capped or not? talkom cannot charge me can they?
