What I like about Windows 8

It's basically a short intro on how to actually use metro and highlights the differences to win7.

All it did was show me how ill suited the UI is to a desktop platform.
Aah, right - I thought you posted it to answer my question re. shortcut properties :). The UI really didn't bother me at first, but I'm slowly finding that doing what I want to do has become a convoluted process that's not intuitive at all. The UAC/permissions thing is gonna drive me up the wall very soon though...

First thing I did when booting up was disable UAC. Hate that crap.

But Win8 doesn't completely disable it with the slider. Hence my frustration at having to resort to the two measures mentioned above. I feel as if I've been denied rights to my own damn computer.

FWIW - I just enabled the 'hidden' administrator account on Win 8 and I can pretty much use my pc like I want. Full, unhindered access to all my drives without being asked every time I want to do something. Those programs which didn't have write access to external drives are now working perfectly.

WinKey + X
Computer Management
Local Users and Groups
Users
Right-click on Adminstrator -> Properties -> Uncheck 'This account is disabled'.

+1 did that as well and no annoying prompts. and BTW saor - called google or youtube. normally if cant find fix yourself. google will/ should help you. and that video showing metro pretty good. if go onto youtube theres channel Lockergnome and they often post how to videos with windows8..

and still unhappy downgrade

sigh this forum glitching :/ i dont know who was one that posted issue but that what i recommend

Tbh I've got no idea what you're on about telling me to use google/youtube. And you know what - I shouldn't need to sit through countless youtube videos to know how to use an o/s ffs

Anyway. Enabling the Administrator account is exactly the same as doing the regedit in a regular account to disable UAC: It renders Metro apps useless. So instead of migrating your data over to the Administrator account you may as well do the registry change and keep your current account.

1.) Shortcuts on Metro Start - how do you change the properties of the shortcut?
Right click on Start item and choose Open File Location. There you will find the Start Screen shortcut, right-click and adjust as before.

Oh.my.word.

Now we've got all the keyboard shortcut junkies here, trying to teach us Windows all over again!!

Time to go and read something interesting on The Verge.

Goodnight all! Oh, and Windows 8....sucks. ;)

Well, I wanted to say that what I liked about my legal copy of Windows 8 Pro is the ability to reinstall Windows 7 and appreciate it even more.....but I just couldnt. :p

PFFFFFT! :p

I bet the first thing you noticed was lack of UEFI and 30 second + booting!
I love that my PC goes from Bios screen to login in under 6 seconds :D

Gotta say I am really enjoying win 8. Don't know why all the hate for it. With start installed its a pleasure. The metro interface really is not all that bad. But with start 8 running you don't even need to bother with metro. Not to mention speed. It's a lot snappier than win7. And at R120 what a win.

Online via MS upgrade site. Although I did have a valid win7 license it didn't even ask me for it. So in essence anyone can do it. I have heard some people are asked for a key but not all.

There's a free 90 day trial you can download from the Microsoft site if you want to try it ...

Ta, will try that for my kids PC:)

I really do appreciate Windows 8, also no big Metro supporter but with time I will be 100% familiar. Adobe products also run way more resource friendly on Windows 8 against Windows 7 on the same rig's. Explorer 10 is also fantastic and crashes way less than Firefox and Chrome.

I enjoy Windows 8, enough said, this is my opinion.

Just to add, I am not a widget or App user on many levels and prefer my old-school style of getting information and doing things on computer platforms. So I do not actually use any of those marketplace applications, but I am used to the Metro to get where I want and it is fast. I only bought Windows 8 for the "said by Microsoft" performance increase over Windows 7.

coolest feature so far for me is the experience on a retina macbook pro, windows looks like its made to run in this res. The adaptive brightness is also very impressive, works flawlessly and always gets the brightness spot on in any situation...

Edit : The search in metro is awesome, much quicker then windows 7

I have to say I am thoroughly enjoying it, the more I use it the more I love it. I must admit though, without Start8 I would probably get very frustrated, but having the start menu back makes it for me.

As for Metro I am getting into it. Downloaded a few apps off the store and its actually pretty sweet. News 24 in full screen, nicely laid out is great.

My honest opinion to anyone is give it a try before you listen to all the haters out there.
