What is a tech purchase you quickly regretted?

Where did you hear that? The regular AA (Apple Acolyte) meeting? Samsung S series tablets and they even come with your favourite thing regular updates.

Hmmm. This is a hard question. I like tech, and usually, when it is not workable, I repurpose it. I am also a retro geek, more a snob, so nothing is really old in my view.

What did I regret?

1) Buying a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. That device diminished nearly everything I cherished about Sony. Let's say that going with an Samsung Galaxy S would have been the better choice.

2) Buying my kid a LeapFrog device. It is a schit educational ecosystem. Purchasing a standard tablet instead would have been the superior choice.

I still have my Garmin Nuvi 55 GPS that I bought in 2017, as my car does NOT have a 'connected infotainment / surveillance, monitoring and reporting technology (SMART) system' in it - I do the bi-annual map updates & also do monthly firmware / software updates as & when available as well...

The ONLY time I ever have to use data is when it's plugged into my PC to do these updates - other than that there's NO ISSUES with 'loss of cell-phone network tower signal' when travelling in remote or mountainous areas - such as in Limpopo or Mpumalanga...

It's also easily transferrable between vehicles when I have to sometimes have to hire a rental car for work purposes.

I see where you're having difficulty with Android. It's an OS that can be installed on many devices, some are kak which seems to the lot you used and flagships are good.
Going from a crap phone like your doogee and a Dixon tablet to Apple would be like the second coming. Cause you went from crap entry level Cash Crusaders devices to flagship.
Actually see that quite a few times, than of course it's how wonderful Apple is. But generally those who go from high end to Apple are like eh

I’ve gone from very high end Android devices to apple and always been happier. I use multiple OSes due to development. But will never use Android again as my main OS on choice on mobile devices, it’s just crap.

Yes guess what it's optimised for? Mid to high end devices. Not your Cash Crusader Doogee probably running some Spectrum SOC with 1gb RAM.
Man I would've thought the way you go on about Apple being the second coming you'd have actually used high end devices. Turns out you used rubbish and cried over it.
Can't blame an OS when you're running it on crap. Why do you think even Apple stops updating older devices?

The one that stands out for me mostly because of how poor the user experience was versus the cost was a D-link wireless media streamer. Couldn't really stream anything reliably, took forever to build libraries and generally sucked.

Only time I've actually felt like I wasted money...most of the time tech is either at least fun to play with for awhile or teaches you something useful...all I learnt from that device was to avoid D-Link.

Right now mine is a Raspberry pi 5 with Home assistant installed on it :(

I don't know what people liked about the R.A.T. mice. Though it could be tweaked it didn't solve any problem. How come it is still going I dunno.

The only good mouse that Mad Catz ever made was the M.O.J.O. M2.

At least there's some versatility there if you don't end up using it for automation - I ended up taking the D-Link apart and using it as a wireless NIC....that cost a grand and a half in 2004-2005.
