K, so it has been a while since I last posted. I gave up actually. Heard back from voda saying that the new antennae has been delayed by site applications so... but ja...

Here is my new problem. Something seems to have come right with voda lately. I connect, and for the first time in like months, I am getting awesome pings in game... like high 70's, low 80's. Where usually I have been getting like over 200, sometimes over 2000. So I am happy, but that is where it ends. For some reason, even though I have low latency, I have worse lag than EVER. I can't walk even 10 steps ingame without a "problem with your connection" popping up on screen, or my guy freezing ingame, only to come back 10 seconds later, to find that I have been killed. Not anyones fault but... why the low ping and yet I have the worst lag I have ever had.

2 and 2 are not making 4. Is there a problem at the moment with the net in general? Because a friend of mine who has ADSL is having problems checking his latency online. Almost like we are getting wrong latency readings from the servers.

I am just wondering what is going on. Anyone else having the same problem?

I'm quite keen to get updates on your (and others) gaming experience, latency, lag (can you define them?), etc.

Well, I only really use my HSDPA for gaming. Reason being that I moved to a place with no telkom lines, but was pleasantly surprised that I could get 3G. This is all old info... :)

Anyways, as mentioned, used to have terrible lag problems. Whereby I couldn't even move without the game stuttering. I pulled out of all the leagues I was participating in, and just played for fun. But as I mentioned, lately, I am getting awesome pings. Really low, feels like I have a broadband connection. But regardless, games still stick, and sometimes I get kicked from servers because of it, even though my ping is reported as being low... so... I don't know. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same thing... even in teamspeak, my latency is 30 higher than the friend of mine who runs the server off of his 4 meg DSL line. It is a private server so... but even there, I am having problems... voice breaking up, disconnections... so ja...

Feeling better about Voda at the moment... just wondering what is up... not making sense :)

Can you still send me some test results?

Sorry not the same guy but;

Im playing Call Of duty 4 and Battlefield Bad company with some lag but not as bad as it could be.

Using E272 with cradle and Poynting antennea.

My ping ranges between 180 and 292 depending on the day.

Download 1800 avg
Upload 1100 avg

I would suspect that's about as good as it can get with a wireless service.

Do you see a post-7PM slowdown?

Yes download drops to approx 400-800 but upload stay's 1100 avg and ping goes up as well to approx 290. Usually after 8PM it shoots up again.

Hey, I think that I have worked out what might be wrong... seems that my modem is over heating and so disconnects me when it does... this is also why as it starts starts lagging, I think.

Could be wrong but... modem is currently VERY hot... is this normal?

Could for sure be a cause for the disconnects but not sure about the latency.

But it's never good for the modem to be hot. Which model is this?

Some other people have reported similar experiences about heat, not sure about disconnects. You have an E220?

LoL, nah... I am quite patient and understand that there is no point complaining when I get shot because of lag... but ja :D hahaha

Playing on wireless against people who have DSL is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. I could still surprise you and kick your ass, but most often than not, I come off second best ;)

As to my modem, I have the E272 (the vodafone 7.2meg one).
And just as an example, I have only been online 18 minutes, and already my modem is hot... I haven't burnt myself on it, as mentioned in a similar thread, but within minutes it gets VERY hot. As mentioned, not a good thing, and probably the reason why I get disconnected, but dont know about the lag spikes.... :)

If it's getting so hot, it's working harder than normal. That most likely means it's not getting a good signal. This will then also impact your latency and throughput.

I suspect an external antenna could help you.

Yeah, the fact that I live on the edge of the footprint for JHB doesn't help I guess. I dont know what changed that I am getting awesome latency lately, if you overlook the occassionally frequent lag spikes, but still, awesome otherwise.

Ag, I am only here for another month and then I am moving so... gonna make sure to be close to a DSL hub, but I dont mind HSDPA anymore... expect for the fact that I gotta budget my bandwidth... but otherwise all cool...

hooah!

:D

Hey, just an update... my connection is SOOOO MUCH BETTER. HUGE difference... lately, my connection has been 3 bar signal... speeds of 2326kps download, and 653kps upload... Big difference :D

My sucky connection this evening makes sense now. All the Cape Town bandwidth has been reallocated to Joburg.

Hahaha... sorry to hear that :D hehehe... nah, but on a serious note, I don't know if this is just a fluke or if Vodacom has been working in the area... but thanks guys. Atleast I dont have to suffer form internetlessness or internet suckiness no more... for now :)

Now my only problem is budgeting my bandwidth, if only we could do something about the cost of data... hmmmm :p hahaha
