Hey guys at the moment I am trying different cellphone providers as I have given up on Vodacom and my 3G problems.

Is there anything specific I should know about Virgin mobile (using their prepaid option)

They suck enormously. I can't say enough bad things about them (and I'm usually very nice and I always look on the bright side). There is no bright side with Virgin only pain, incompetence, being ripped off, and a sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Good grief can I ask why you feel like that?:confused:

Please elaborate? Dropped calls? Bad QoS?

I didn't know Virgin still operated ;). First off you mention "3g problems" ...just for your info Virgin [who is using Cell-C's network] does not have 3G....(and if you DO somehow get 3G, it will be Vodacom's 3G)...

...basically ask yourself what you think and expect from Cell-C in terms of "3G" , divide it by 2 and you have Virgin.

I know they don't have 3G and have Edge instead.

They have to give me a free virgin to abuse before I would join them permanently for frequent free virgins.

Thus, I think I am safer with MTN.

Their 'gprs' service, while cheap is not worth the grief. It only works half the time (I'm being optimistic). They ripped me off time and time again. I found dissappearing airtime on my account, I called their entirely incompetent call centre and found out they'd attached my number to someone else's account and were using up my airtime (they never refunded, apologised, or called me back). I tried them again last month, after one day I just thre the sim card away.

I imagine it tasted bitter and no amount of sauce or seasoning would help. It's sad because I otherwise like the Virgin brand (and it's attitude) and Richard Branson (anyone who says they're going to build a spaceship and then actually does it deserves some credit) but how they let Virgin Mobile SA go on is just beyond me.

I dont have a problem with virgin?

I only use the internet on my nokia 6300 but it works perfectly. EDGE is actually quicker that vodacoms EDGE in my area.

Richard Branson can slide down a building in Cape town.......[He loved Gauteng]
He can choose from many Vodacom towers that deliver 3g.
He can also not attach a rope!

What you should know about Virgin:

1. They have a shoddy call centre with staff who get confused by simple questions.
2. Your calls will mysteriously get dropped, go straight to voicemail or won't come through at all.
3. NO 3G at all when MTN and Vodacom are already discussing upgrades to their 3G networks.
4. Cheap data...when it works.
5. Creative billing
6. Even their staff complain (I went to replace my sim card...again, last week and the guy who did the sim swap said he had swapped his 3 times already.)
7. and and and

Argh, it's too early for this, gonna pi$$ myself off for the rest of the day if I carry on...

Great Network, great call rates.

SMS unlimted R299 (HTC S710). Includes per second billing, simple call rates for all voice calls. Cheap data usage and free SMS (not international).

I get my bills in the post, can access online as well.

If I don't use my credit in a month it rolls over, I get v-rewards as well.

Never had problems with voice mail, or calls.

Edge is excellent and is fast enough for when my ADSL cap expires. I plug my phone in to PC and connects everytime.

Customer Service on 123 is useless, but once you complain (hellopeter) you get someone with a brain who calls back. The response from the senior staff is very good.

Will be testing international roaming out soon so fingers crossed that all works out.

No my little pumpkin I don't work for Virgin, I'm just telling it like it is. I'm going to assume you work for Vodacom/MTN?
