What supplements do you take?

After-lunch warm winter drink:
Gelatin, collagen, cocoa, maca, cinnamon, fennel, bit of salt.

No it isn’t OTC, these medications are dangerous and don’t actually put you to sleep as much as put you in an unconscious state. The brainwaves associated with sleep are absent on these drugs.
Neither of those claims is universally true. Zolpidem, a non-benzodiazepine, for instance has either no or a positive impact on sleep architecture. Loprazolam, a benzodiazepine, is a longer acting option that is also found not to have negative impacts on sleep architecture. Neither drug simply puts someone into an unconscious state. Even the other sedative drugs that do impact sleep architecture don't make the brainwaves associated with sleep absent. All they can do is change the duration of or eliminate some of the sleep stages. More typically they do the former.

Promethazine (Phernergan) is another option, but it is not without potential side-effects. It does decrease the percentage REM sleep. Like zolpidem though this may be due to an increase of slow wave sleep and total sleep duration, hence not necessarily a bad thing.

And while all of these drugs may have some long term consequences so too does sleep deprivation. Thus for people with chronic insomnia they have to choose their poison - fatigue plus other toxic effects of lack of sleep or some possible toxic effects of a medication.

Other options like supplements, exercise and meditation can have some moderate benefits. I'd always suggest trying exercise, then meditation to see if they have any impact. My experience is that exercise has minimal impact and meditation has none. Supplements are another option, but they aren't necessarily without side-effects. The belief that they're inherently safe and medication isn't is not always true. If medication is the only option that works then start at a low dose. Break tablets into halves or even quarters to see how low you can go.

Arthrochoice......because I grew up without helmets, knee guards and even proper sports shoes. Now I ache in the places I used to play.

I have started alternating Ensure Gold and Biogen ISO Whey protein in the mornings instead of starting the work day fasted.
