iPhone is for the pretentious. Not dissing on anyone because I am a former iPhone owner. If you can get the 8gb 3G then by all means, its probably the best bang for your buck on a Vodacom contract. I'm in the same position as you (tomorrow is my upgrade), and I'm either getting an HTC Magic or Blackberry Bold (both with no pay-in!). Probably the Magic because of my fascination with Android. Just my 2c.
Just couldn't justify dropping that R3500 extra pay in despite my generous parents giving me the go-ahead. Had a change of heart when I helped a man who earns R3000 a month before UIF today at the Legal Aid clinic (I'm a 4th year law student). Sorry, just my little bleeding heart. Had to share it somewhere!

I know there may be a huge issue with stock and theft by suggesting this... but how many people can't figure out what phone to buy? I mean, you read all you can online, ask mybb folk and hope like hell when you actually get to use it for the first time after buying it that it doesn't suck, cause you're stuck with it for two years.
Isn't there opportunity for somebody to open a cell shop that actually lets you play with a few phones on a saturday morning and ask a salesperson who is actually vaguely technical some useful questions. I really don't trust most of my friend's opinions and would rather sit down with 3 phones, sync them, send an sms, take a photo, play music, surf the web and set up my email. Maybe the experience even comes to you - on a mobile stand, rolls into your offices every 2 months and that way the assistant can give you some personal attention...

We get lots of requests to compare in detail Nokia 5800 with Apple Iphone 3G. Here are some reasons we believe Nokia 5800 is way ahead than Iphone-
1) Size
The iphone is bigger in size and uneasy for one hand grip. Nokia 5800 is designed to fit well into your hands. Being smaller in width, its easy to operate single handedly.
Iphone size: 115.5 X 62.1 X 12.3 mm
Nokia 5800 size: 111 X 51.7 X 15.5 mm
2) Weight
Iphone is much bulkier than Nokia 5800. Nokia 5800 is 25g lighter than Iphone in weight.

Nokia 5800: 109g
3) Screen Resolution
The Iphone has 3.5” screen while Nokia 5800 has 3.2” but the resolution of 5800 is far more superior to Iphone.

4) Storage

In other parts of the world, the 8GB unsubsidized Iphone model costs 499 euros ($700) in Italy, 350 pounds ($620) in UK, $700 in India. Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic is expected to sell around the world for about $400 or below.
20) Experience
Nokia: Ages of experience, hundreds of success stories and dozens of smart handsets in current portfolio. Nokia has about 40% market share with the No.1 spot with no close competitors. Certainly the king when it comes to brand value, service and experience.
Apple: First phone ever launched by Apple is Iphone, no prior experience in the telecom market. It’s a novice in the market with a very less market share despite having millions of Iphone sold.
Verdict:
Almost all the major brands around the world like Samsung, HTC, LG, etc launched their touchscreen smartphones with a hope to beat Apple’s Iphone. No-one came close to Iphone when it comes to looks, style, feel and features.

- to my knowledge, A2DP, file transfer and sync and AVRCP profiles are still not supported in latest iphone firmware (I stand to be corrected)

The OP ask the following which does not make mention of the iphone 3gs, just iphone 3g thus my response and I am quite happy with my choice of phone which is the Nokia 5800XM, really excellent value for money as compared to the Iphone in any guise.
If you have to live with a phone for 2 years, it should be because of informed choice, rather than bitterness because of lack or non-implementation of features.
The Nokia 5800XM is the testbed for the N97 so reqular improvements have already been released already with another one expected around October.
Then again, look at the price compared to the Iphone 3G :erm:

Correct. I have no particular bias toward either phone. But if I was in the market for a particular handset, didn't buy it because of a whole bunch of issues and then a few months later realised that the issues had been sorted out in the next version of the handset, I might be a bit irritated if I had bought the legacy phone without knowing all of that.
